Your Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 is plugged in, but the battery percentage isn't budging. Maybe the charging indicator shows up for a second and disappears, or nothing happens at all. This is a frustrating situation, but there's usually a straightforward fix.
The Z Fold 7 has some charging quirks specific to its foldable design. Between the USB-C port being exposed to pocket lint, a known issue where charging stops around 45%, and battery calibration problems after deep discharge, there are several things that can go wrong. Let's work through them from most likely to least likely.
Force Restart the Phone
Start with the simplest fix. A force restart clears out temporary software hiccups that might be blocking the charging circuit. It only takes about 10 seconds and fixes the problem more often than you'd think.
Press and hold the Volume down and Side buttons simultaneously for 10 seconds until the device restarts. You'll see the Samsung logo pop up, and then it'll boot back to normal. Once it's back on, plug it in and check if the charging icon appears.
If you're dealing with a completely unresponsive phone that won't show anything on screen, the force restart is still your first move. Sometimes the phone is actually on, just frozen, and the charging animation won't display until you wake it up.
Clean the USB-C Port
This is the number one cause of charging issues on any phone with a USB-C port, and the Z Fold 7 is no exception. Lint and dust pack into that little opening every time you slide the phone into your pocket. Eventually there's enough gunk in there that the cable can't make a solid connection.
Grab a flashlight and look inside the charging port. If you see any debris, turn the phone off first. Use compressed air from a safe distance to blow it out, this is the safest method and usually does the trick. If you need to physically remove something stuck in there, use a wooden or plastic toothpick. Never use metal tools, they can short out the pins inside the port.
Tap the phone gently with the port facing down to help dislodge anything loose. After cleaning, try charging again. You might be surprised how often this works.
Check Your Cable and Charger
The Z Fold 7 supports 25W wired charging, but only if you're using the right gear. Samsung recommends certified Samsung chargers or any USB PD PPS charger and cable for optimal charging speeds. A random USB-C cable from a drawer might not negotiate properly with the phone.
Swap out your cable first, try a different USB-C cable from a known good source. Then try a different wall adapter. If you have access to a friend's Samsung charger or a quality GaN charger that supports PPS, test with that. Also try plugging into a different wall outlet entirely.
One thing people don't think about: remove your phone case. Some cases, especially thicker ones or those with magnetic accessories, can interfere with the connection. The USB-C plug might not seat fully if the case is in the way.
Deal With the 45% Charging Issue
This is a known problem specific to the Z Fold 7. Some units stop charging entirely when the battery hits around 45%. The charging indicator might still show, but the percentage just sits there. If this sounds familiar, you're not alone.
First, check if the phone is overheating. The Z Fold 7 will throttle or stop charging if it gets too warm, and the folding display design can trap heat more than a standard slab phone. If the phone feels warm, set it down in a cool spot for a few minutes and try again.
If overheating isn't the issue, try a different charger. Some third-party chargers don't communicate properly with the Z Fold 7's charging controller and cause it to stop at certain battery levels. A Samsung 25W or 45W charger with PPS support is the safest bet.
If the problem persists, it might be a battery calibration issue. Let the phone discharge completely until it shuts off, then charge it to 100% without interruption. This can reset the battery controller and fix the 45% stoppage.
Wait After a Deep Discharge
The Z Fold 7 can behave oddly if the battery has been completely drained for a while. Deep discharge puts the battery into a protection state where it needs a steady charge for several minutes before it shows any signs of life.
Leave it connected to the wall charger for at least 15 30 minutes. Don't unplug it to check if it's working, just let it sit. A computer's USB port doesn't deliver enough power for this, so use a wall outlet. After 30 minutes, attempt a force restart while it's still plugged in.
If you see nothing after half an hour, try a different cable and adapter combination. Sometimes a specific charger won't wake the battery from deep discharge, but another one will.
Once it does boot up, avoid letting it drain completely again. Deep discharge is hard on lithium-ion batteries and can cause the calibration issues mentioned above.
Wireless Charging to the Rescue
If wired charging isn't working at all, try wireless. The Z Fold 7 supports Qi wireless charging at up to 15W. This is a great diagnostic tool, if wireless charging works but USB-C doesn't, you know the problem is the charging port or cable, not the battery or software.
Place the phone on a Qi wireless charging pad. Make sure it's centered properly, the wireless charging coil is in the lower half of the phone, not the center like on a standard slab phone. Some wireless pads have a smaller sweet spot that doesn't align well with the Z Fold 7's folded shape.
Remove any thick cases or accessories with metal plates or magnets. These block the wireless charging signal completely. If you're using a Samsung Wireless Charger Trio or similar, make sure it's plugged into at least a 25W adapter to deliver full speed to the Z Fold.
If wireless charging works fine, your USB-C port likely needs professional cleaning or repair.
Update the Software
Samsung pushes updates through One UI that can fix charging bugs. If you're running an older version of Android 15 or an early One UI 7 build, a software update could resolve the issue entirely.
Go to Settings > Software Update > Download and Install. If there's an update available, grab it and let the phone restart. Test charging afterward.
If the phone won't turn on at all, you can update through a computer. Connect it via USB-C to a Windows PC or Mac, open Smart Switch, and look for the software update option there.
Charge With the Phone Off
Sometimes background apps or system processes interfere with charging. Turn the Z Fold 7 completely off, then plug it in. If the battery starts charging normally, you've confirmed it's a software issue.
Charging while the phone is off also gives you the fastest possible charge speed. No screen, no background tasks, no wireless radios, just pure power going into the battery.
If it works with the phone off, consider what apps you installed recently. A rogue app could be keeping the phone awake and interfering with the charging controller. Boot into Safe Mode (press and hold the Power off option on screen) to test charging without third-party apps running.
If safe mode resolves the issue, start uninstalling recent apps one by one until you find the culprit.
Check Battery Health in Device Care
Samsung includes a battery diagnostic in the Device Care settings. Open Settings > Battery and Device Care > Diagnostics > Battery Status. This will tell you the battery's current maximum capacity and whether it's functioning normally.
If the battery health is below 80%, you're looking at natural degradation. The Z Fold 7's battery is under more stress than a standard phone's because of the foldable display's power demands. A replacement might be in order.
While you're in Device Care, run the full phone diagnostic. It checks the charging port, battery, and other hardware components. If it flags the charging port as faulty, you'll need a repair.
Restore the Phone (Last Resort)
If nothing else has worked, a factory reset can wipe out deep software corruption that's blocking charging. Back up your data first, this erases everything on the phone.
Go to Settings > General Management > Reset > Factory Data Reset. Follow the prompts and let the phone restart. After it comes back up, test charging before restoring any apps to see if the issue is gone.
If it still won't charge after a factory reset, the problem is hardware. The USB-C port on the Z Fold 7 can wear out over time, especially if you frequently charge with the phone folded or use right-angle cables that put pressure on the connector. A repair shop can replace the charging port assembly.
