When your Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 refuses to update, it's usually a connection or storage issue. You might see an error like "Installation failed" or the download just stops at 0%. Let's get it sorted.
Check Your Wi-Fi and Battery
Software updates need a stable internet connection and enough battery. Make sure you're on a reliable Wi-Fi network and that your phone has at least 50% charge. The Z Flip 7's charging can be finicky, if it stopped charging partway, unplug the USB-C cable, plug it back in, and let it reach 100% before starting an update. Wireless charging also works, but try a wired charge for the most consistent power during the update.
Free Up Storage Space
Major Android updates often require 5-8 GB of free space. Open Settings > Device care > Storage and check how much is available. If you're low, tap Clean now or manually delete apps, photos, and old downloads. Moving photos to cloud storage frees up significant space without losing anything.
Force Restart Your Phone
A simple restart clears temporary glitches. Press and hold Volume Down + Side key for 10 15 seconds until the Z Flip 7 restarts. This is the same force restart method Samsung recommends for all sorts of issues. Once it reboots, go back to Settings > Software update > Download and install and try again.
Delete the Downloaded Update File
If the download got corrupted, it can block a fresh attempt. Go to Settings > Apps > Show system apps > Software update and tap Force stop. Then clear its cache and data. This removes the partially downloaded update. After that, restart your phone and download the update again from scratch.
Clear the System Cache Partition
A corrupted system cache can interfere with updates. Turn off your Z Flip 7 completely. Then press and hold Volume Up + Side key until the Samsung logo appears, then release. This boots into recovery mode. Use the volume keys to highlight Wipe cache partition and press the Power button to select it. Confirm with the Power key. Once done, select Reboot system now. This won't delete your personal data.
Check Samsung's Server Status
Sometimes the problem is on Samsung's end. When a big update like One UI 16 launches, their servers can get overwhelmed. Check downdetector.com or search for "Samsung server status" to see if others are having the same issue. If so, wait an hour or two and try again. Early morning or late night updates tend to go through faster.
Update Via a Computer Using Smart Switch
If the over-the-air update keeps failing, use Samsung Smart Switch on your computer. Install Smart Switch on a Windows PC or Mac, connect your Z Flip 7 via USB-C, and open the app. Look for Update under your device name and click Check for update. The computer handles the download and pushes it to your phone, avoiding any Wi-Fi or storage problems on the phone itself.
Reset Network Settings
Incorrect network settings can stall downloads. Go to Settings > General management > Reset > Reset network settings. This clears saved Wi-Fi networks and Bluetooth connections. Reconnect to your Wi-Fi and try the update again. It's a quick fix if other steps haven't worked.
Make Sure You're on the Right Software Channel
If your Z Flip 7 is a carrier-locked model, updates come from your carrier first. Check Settings > Software update and see if there's a carrier update pending. Sometimes carrier updates need to install before the main Android version appears. You can also check with your carrier's support page for any known delays.
Disable Any VPN or Ad Blocker
VPNs, content blockers, and even some Samsung Secure Folder configurations can interfere with the update server. Turn off any VPN in Settings > Connections > More connection settings > VPN and disable any ad-blocking apps. Then try the update again.
