A Samsung Galaxy Tab A9+ that's completely frozen and won't respond to touch or button presses is incredibly frustrating. The screen might be stuck on an app, the lock screen, or just a black screen. I've found that with Android tablets, these freezes are almost always a temporary software hiccup you can fix yourself without losing any photos or files.
Force Restart the Tablet
This is the first and most effective thing to try. Press and hold the Volume Down button and the Power button at the same time. Keep holding them both for about 10 to 15 seconds until you feel a vibration and see the Samsung logo appear on the screen. This forces a clean reboot and doesn't delete any of your personal data.
Let the Tablet Sit for a Few Minutes
Sometimes the Tab A9+ isn't truly frozen, it's just working hard on something in the background. The Snapdragon 695 chip can struggle a bit with demanding apps or system tasks. If the back of the tablet feels warm, it's probably still processing. Give it a solid five to ten minutes to see if it finishes whatever it's doing and becomes responsive again.
Plug It Into a Charger
A completely drained battery can make the tablet seem dead or frozen. Grab your USB-C cable and a charger that supports at least 15W for the fastest possible charging this tablet can handle. Plug it in and leave it alone for at least 20 to 30 minutes. Sometimes it just needs a little juice before it can power on properly.
Close the Problem App
If everything else works but one app is frozen, you can force close it. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and hold your finger in the middle to open the recent apps view. Find the frozen app's preview and swipe it all the way up off the screen to close it. You can then tap the app icon to reopen it. If a specific app freezes often, check for updates in the Galaxy Store or Google Play Store.
Check Your Available Storage
When your tablet's internal storage is almost full, the system has no room to create temporary files it needs to run smoothly, which can cause freezing. If you can get into Settings, go to Settings > Battery and device care > Storage. Look for large files or apps you don't use anymore and delete them. Try to keep at least 5GB free for the system to breathe.
Install the Latest Software Update
Software bugs that cause freezing are often patched in updates. After you've restarted the tablet, go to Settings > Software update > Download and install. If there's an update available, install it. If the tablet freezes during the update process, you might need to use a computer with Samsung's Smart Switch software to complete it.
Reset All Settings
For recurring freezes that a simple restart doesn't fix, a settings reset can help. Go to Settings > General management > Reset > Reset all settings. This will revert your Wi-Fi passwords, wallpaper, and system preferences back to default, but it won't touch your photos, apps, or documents. It's a good way to clear out any corrupted settings causing trouble.
Consider a Factory Reset (Last Resort)
If nothing else works and the tablet is constantly freezing, a factory reset is the nuclear option. You must back up your data first using Samsung Cloud or Smart Switch on a computer. Then, go to Settings > General management > Reset > Factory data reset. This will erase everything and return the tablet to its original out-of-the-box state.
Manage Background Apps and Performance
The Galaxy Tab A9+ benefits from keeping background activity minimal. Go to Settings > Battery and device care > Memory and tap "Clean now" to close background apps. You can also enable "Auto optimisation" here. For a smoother experience, especially with the lower screen resolution, try enabling Reading Mode in Settings for less strain during long browsing sessions.
