When your brand new Samsung Galaxy S26+ doesn't show up on your PC, it can stop you from transferring photos, backing up files, or even just charging efficiently. This is a common hiccup, especially with a new device running the latest One UI 8.5, and it's almost always something you can fix yourself.

The quickest fix is often the cable or the port. Grab a different USB-C cable, preferably one that supports data transfer, and try a different port on your computer. If that doesn't work, a simple restart of both your phone and PC can clear out any temporary software glitches causing the handshake to fail.

Check Your USB Connection Mode

When you connect your S26+, a notification should appear on your phone's screen asking how you want to use the USB connection. If you accidentally tapped "Charge only" or the notification isn't showing, you need to change it manually. Pull down your notification shade and tap the USB connection notification.

Select "Transfer files" or "Android Auto/File Transfer." If you don't see the notification at all, go to Settings > Connections > More connection settings > USB settings. From there, you can set the default USB configuration to "File Transfer."

Inspect and Clean the USB-C Port

The S26+ is susceptible to a "moisture detected" warning, even when the port is dry, which can block data connections. First, power off your phone and take a close look at the USB-C port with a flashlight. Lint and pocket debris are common culprits.

Use a dry, soft-bristled brush or a plastic toothpick to gently dislodge any packed-in dust. Avoid using metal objects. After cleaning, give it a gentle blow and let it sit for a minute before trying to connect again. This often resolves false moisture alerts.

Update Your Windows USB Drivers

Windows might not have the right driver for your new phone. Connect your S26+ to your PC, then press the Windows key + X and select Device Manager. Look under "Portable Devices" or "Other Devices" for your phone, which might have a yellow exclamation mark.

Right-click on the device and select "Update driver." Choose "Search automatically for updated driver software." For the most reliable result, I'd download the official Samsung Android USB Driver from Samsung's developer site and install it manually.

Install the Latest One UI Update

Early software builds can have bugs. Samsung is likely pushing updates to fix these initial connection issues. On your S26+, go to Settings > Software update and tap Download and install.

Make sure your phone is connected to Wi-Fi and has sufficient battery. Installing the latest One UI 8.5 patch can resolve a host of teething problems, including USB and PC connectivity glitches.

Try a Different Computer or Cable

This is a crucial isolation step. Try connecting your S26+ to a different computer, if possible. If it works there, the issue is with your primary PC's settings or USB ports.

Similarly, not all USB-C cables are created equal. Some are charge-only. Use the cable that came with your phone, or ensure you're using a high-quality cable certified for data transfer. The included cable, if you got one, should work.

Enable Developer Options and USB Debugging

This gives your computer a more direct line of communication with your phone. First, enable Developer Options by going to Settings > About phone and tapping "Software information." Tap Build number seven times until you see a message saying you're a developer.

Go back to the main Settings menu, find and open Developer options, and then toggle on USB debugging. Confirm the prompt on your screen. Now try connecting to your PC again.

Check Your PC's Antivirus or Security Suite

Sometimes, overzealous security software can block new devices. Try temporarily disabling your antivirus or firewall software on your Windows PC to see if that's the barrier.

Remember to only do this for a moment to test the connection, and be sure to re-enable your protection immediately afterward. Windows Defender itself can sometimes be the culprit, so you may need to check its controlled folder access settings.

Use Samsung's Smart Switch for PC

If standard file transfer isn't working, Samsung's own software can often force a proper connection. Download and install Samsung Smart Switch on your Windows computer from Samsung's website.

Open Smart Switch on your PC, then connect your S26+ via USB. The software is designed to recognize Samsung devices specifically and can sometimes establish a connection where Windows File Explorer fails. It's a great tool for transfers anyway.

Reset Your Phone's Network Settings

This is a broader step that can clear up misconfigured connection protocols. On your S26+, navigate to Settings > General management > Reset > Reset network settings.

This will reset Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and mobile networks, but it won't touch your personal data. After the reset, reconnect to your Wi-Fi and try the USB connection to your PC again. It's a clean slate for your phone's connectivity.
