When your Galaxy A55's volume buttons stop responding, it's a real hassle. You press them to turn down a video or adjust a call, and nothing happens. The good news is this is often a software hiccup or something simple you can fix without a trip to the repair shop.

I'd start with the quick fixes at the top of this list. They solve the majority of these issues.

Remove Your Phone Case

This is the easiest thing to check. Take your phone out of its case. Sometimes, especially with thicker or ill-fitting cases, the material can press against the buttons or block their full range of motion.

If the buttons work perfectly without the case, you've found your culprit. Try a different case or see if your current one has any debris stuck inside it.

Perform a Force Restart

A force restart clears out temporary software glitches that can make the buttons unresponsive. This is completely safe and won't delete any of your photos, messages, or apps.

For the Galaxy A55, press and hold the Volume Down button and the Side (power) button together for about 10 seconds. Keep holding them until you see the Samsung logo appear on the screen, then let go. Your phone will boot up normally.

Check for Software Updates

Samsung regularly releases updates for One UI that fix bugs, including ones that might affect hardware buttons. It's always a good idea to make sure you're running the latest software.

Go to Settings > Software update and tap Download and install. Make sure your phone is connected to Wi-Fi and has at least 50% battery before you start.

Clean the Volume Buttons

Dust, lint, and pocket debris are common enemies of the volume rocker. The A55's USB-C port is also less water-resistant than Samsung's flagships, so if any sticky liquid got in, it could cause problems.

Take a can of compressed air and give the area around the buttons a few short bursts. For more stubborn gunk, you can dip a cotton swab in a tiny amount of isopropyl alcohol (90% or higher), wring it out so it's just damp, and gently clean around the button edges. Let it dry completely before testing.

Test in Safe Mode

Safe Mode temporarily disables all third-party apps you've downloaded. If your volume buttons work perfectly in Safe Mode, it means a recently installed app is causing the conflict.

To boot your Galaxy A55 into Safe Mode, press and hold the Side button until the power menu appears. Then, press and hold the "Power off" option on your screen. You'll see a prompt to restart in Safe Mode. Tap it. If the buttons work here, you'll need to uninstall apps one by one (starting with the most recent) to find the offender.

Check Your Sound Settings

While Samsung doesn't have a "Change with Buttons" toggle like iPhone, it's worth checking your sound settings aren't in an odd state. Go to Settings > Sounds and vibration.

Make sure your media volume isn't all the way down. You can also try changing the sound mode from Silent to Sound and back again, as this can sometimes reset the system's connection to the physical buttons.

Use the On-Screen Volume Slider

While you're figuring this out, you can still control your volume. Just press either volume button once to make the on-screen slider appear, then drag it with your finger.

You can also pull down the notification panel twice to see the quick settings tiles and adjust the volume slider from there. This is a good workaround to have while troubleshooting.

Enable and Use Assistant Menu

Samsung's Assistant Menu is similar to iPhone's AssistiveTouch and gives you virtual buttons. Enabling and using it can sometimes jog the system and restore function to the physical keys.

Go to Settings > Accessibility > Interaction and dexterity > Assistant menu and turn it on. A floating icon will appear. Tap it, then tap Volume up or Volume down a few times. After that, try your physical buttons again.

Test the Buttons in Different Apps

See if the problem is universal or app-specific. Open the YouTube app and try to change the volume while a video is playing. Then, try it during a phone call, and finally from your home screen.

If the buttons work in YouTube but not on a call, the issue might be tied to your phone app settings. If they don't work anywhere, it points more to a system-wide or hardware problem.

Consider a Factory Reset (Last Resort)

If every other step has failed, a factory reset can eliminate deep-seated software corruption. This will erase everything on your phone, so backing up your data is absolutely essential first.

You can back up to your Samsung account or Google Drive. To reset, go to Settings > General management > Reset > Factory data reset. Follow the prompts. After the phone restores, set it up as new first to test the buttons before restoring your backup, in case the backup contains the corrupted setting.
