Your PS5 Pro won't read a game disc. Or maybe the disc drive add-on isn't showing up in the system menu at all. Since the Pro ships as a digital console and the disc drive is sold separately, the fix path is a bit different from what you'd expect on a standard PS5. Most issues are software‑side or related to that first‑time pairing step.
Start with the disc itself. Hold it by the edges and check the data side under a bright light. Smudges, fingerprints, or scratches will trip the Blu‑ray laser. Wipe from the center outward with a microfiber cloth, never in circles. If the disc is clean and the drive is still being stubborn, move through the steps below.
Pair the Drive Online (One‑Time Requirement)
This is the most common gotcha on the PS5 Pro. The optional disc drive add‑on requires an online pairing step before it works. Sony calls it a “one‑time online activation”, basically the drive needs to handshake with Sony’s servers to verify it’s legit. Without that handshake, the console won’t recognize the drive at all.
Connect your PS5 Pro to the internet, attach the disc drive to the console’s USB‑A port (use the cable that came with the drive), and follow the on‑screen prompt. The pairing takes about 30 seconds and only needs to happen once, even if you move the drive to another console later. If you bought the drive used, you might need to do this again if the previous owner didn’t unpair it.
Hard Power Cycle the Console
A full power‑down clears the drive controller’s cache, which can hold a bad state from a failed read. Press and hold the front power button until you hear the second beep (that’s the soft‑reset method). The console will fully shut down. Wait 30 seconds, then press power again to boot fresh.
Give the dashboard a full 15 seconds to load before inserting a disc. Inserting too early, while the drive subsystem is still initializing, is a quiet cause of false‑fail reads on the Pro, especially after a cold boot.
Update the System Software
Sony has shipped multiple firmware builds that improve USB device compatibility and drive behavior. The PS5 Pro requires system software 26.x for Pro‑specific features like PSSR 2, and the current build as of April 2026 is 26.03‑13.20.00. Drive fixes are often bundled into these updates.
Go to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. If you’ve been running offline or in Rest Mode without scheduled updates, you may be months behind. Let the console download and install the update, then restart and try the disc again.
Check the USB Connection
Since the disc drive is external, the USB cable and port matter. Try a different USB‑A port on the PS5 Pro (the front and rear ports are both fine). If the cable feels loose or the connection is intermittent, swap the cable, any standard USB‑A to USB‑B cable works, the same kind used for external hard drives.
Also check the drive’s own USB port for dust or debris. A quick blast of compressed air can clear a marginal connection.
Try a Known‑Working Disc
Insert a different PS5 game disc or a Blu‑ray movie that you know works on another PS5. If the second disc reads fine, the first disc is the problem. If both fail, the issue is with the drive or the pairing. Movie discs use the same laser wavelength as game discs, so they’re a valid test. Avoid using audio CDs, those use a different laser and won’t tell you much about the drive’s health.
Clean the Disc (Do It Right)
Use a clean microfiber cloth, the kind for camera lenses or glasses. Wipe straight from the center hole outward to the edge, never in circles. Circular scratches align with the laser’s rotation and make things worse. For sticky residue, dampen the cloth with a tiny bit of distilled water or 90%+ isopropyl alcohol. Never apply liquid directly to the disc. Let it dry fully before reinserting.
Reset the Console (Without Losing Games)
If software glitches persist, a factory reset that keeps your games installed can clear out corrupted system data. Go to Settings > System > System Software > Reset Options > Reset Your Console. Choose the option to keep your games and apps. The reset takes about 20 minutes and wipes system caches and settings, but your saves (if backed up to the cloud) and installed games stay.
After the reset, you’ll need to go through setup again. Re‑attach the disc drive and run the online pairing again, yes, the reset clears that pairing state, so you’ll have to do the one‑time handshake fresh.
When the Drive Isn’t Recognized at All
If the disc drive doesn’t show up in Settings > Accessories > USB Drives, try disconnecting and reconnecting the drive while the console is on. Sometimes a hot‑swap wakes it up. If that fails, power down completely, unplug the console for two minutes, then reconnect the drive and boot up. This forces a fresh USB enumeration.
Also check that the drive’s firmware is up to date. The disc drive itself receives firmware updates through the PS5 Pro’s system update, there’s no separate process. If you’ve updated the console, the drive should have gotten the same patch.
One more thing: if you moved the console with the disc loaded, the drive’s loading mechanism can shift slightly. A power cycle usually clears the resulting error state.
