When your OnePlus Nord 4 stops buzzing for calls and notifications, it can be easy to miss important alerts. The good news is this is usually a quick software or settings fix, not a hardware problem.
I'd start with a simple restart. Press and hold the Power button for about ten seconds until you feel a vibration and see the phone reboot. This clears out any temporary glitches that might be stopping the vibration motor.
Check Your Sound and Vibration Profile
Open your quick settings panel by swiping down from the top of the screen twice. Look for the ring mode icon, which might say "Ring," "Vibrate," or "Silent." Make sure it's set to either "Ring" or "Vibrate." If it's on "Silent," your phone won't vibrate at all.
You can also check this in your main settings. Go to Settings > Sound & vibration. Under "Sound mode," ensure it's not set to "Mute."
Verify the Main Vibration Switch
In the same Settings > Sound & vibration menu, look for the "Vibrate for calls" option. Toggle it off and then back on again. Right below that, you'll find "Vibration intensity."
Tap on "Vibration intensity." Here, you can adjust the strength for calls, notifications, and touch feedback using sliders. If these are set too low, you might not feel the vibration. Try cranking them up to see if that's the issue.
Inspect App-Specific Notification Settings
If the vibration is only missing from a specific app like WhatsApp or your messaging app, the problem is likely in that app's notification settings. Go to Settings > Apps and select the app in question.
Tap on "Notifications." You'll see categories like "General" or "Messages." Tap into each relevant category and make sure the "Vibrate" toggle is enabled. Sometimes an app update can reset these permissions.
Test the Vibration Motor with a Shortcut
OnePlus phones have a handy diagnostic tool. Open your Phone dialer and type *#808#. This will open the "Engineering Mode" menu.
Look for an option labeled "Vibrator" or "Vibration test." Tap it, and the phone should run a diagnostic that makes the motor buzz. If it vibrates here, you know the hardware is working and the issue is purely software-based.
Look for a Software Update
Occasionally, a bug in OxygenOS can affect system functions like haptic feedback. It's worth checking for an update. Go to Settings > About device > OxygenOS version.
Tap on the icon in the top right and select "Download now" if an update is available. Installing the latest software can resolve these kinds of glitches. Your Nord 4 runs Android 14 with OxygenOS 14, so make sure you're on the latest build.
Boot Into Safe Mode
If the problem started after installing a new app, that app could be causing a conflict. Booting into Safe Mode temporarily disables all third-party apps. Press and hold the Power button until the power menu appears.
Then, tap and hold the "Power off" option on your screen. A prompt will ask if you want to reboot to Safe Mode. Tap "OK." Once in Safe Mode, test if vibrations work. If they do, a recently installed app is the culprit.
To exit Safe Mode, just restart your phone normally.
Reset App Preferences or Network Settings
This is a less nuclear option than a full factory reset. Go to Settings > Additional settings > Back up and reset. Tap on "Reset phone." Here, you'll see options like "Reset app preferences" and "Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth."
"Reset app preferences" will revert all your app notification and permission settings to default without deleting any app data. It's a good step to try if you suspect a misconfigured app.
Check for Physical Damage or Moisture
While the Nord 4 has a solid metal unibody, it doesn't have an official IP water resistance rating. If your phone has been exposed to moisture or had a recent drop, it could affect the internal vibration motor.
Listen closely while a call comes in. If you can hear a faint buzzing sound but feel no vibration, the motor might be running but its physical connection or the component itself could be damaged.
Consider a Factory Reset
If you've tried everything else and the diagnostic test confirmed the hardware works, a factory reset is the last software step. Remember to back up all your important data first. Go to Settings > Additional settings > Back up and reset > Erase all data (factory reset).
After the reset, set up the phone as new without restoring a backup immediately. Test the vibration function right away. If it works now, the issue was deep within your system software.
