When your OnePlus Nord 4's speaker suddenly goes quiet, it can turn a great phone into a frustrating one. Whether you're missing notifications, can't hear calls, or your media is silent, the issue is usually something you can fix yourself. The metal unibody design is great for durability, but it doesn't make the speakers immune to common software glitches or physical blockages.

Start with a free quick sound test that plays left and right channels one at a time. Hearing both sides confirms the hardware, which makes the remaining steps much easier to pin down.

Check Your Volume and Sound Mode

This is always the first place to look. While you're on the home screen or in an app, press the volume up button on the side of your Nord 4. You should see the volume slider appear. Make sure it's not all the way down or set to vibrate only.

For more control, go into Settings > Sound & vibration. Here, you can adjust the media, ringtone, and alarm volumes individually. Also, check the "Sound mode" at the top isn't set to Silent or Vibrate.

Disconnect Bluetooth and Accessories

Your phone might be trying to send audio somewhere else. Swipe down from the top of the screen to open the Quick Settings panel and look for the Bluetooth icon. If it's blue, tap it to turn it off. This ensures sound is routed back to your phone's internal speakers.

Also, remove any case that might be covering the speaker grille. The Nord 4's bottom-firing speaker can easily be muffled by a poorly designed case or a piece of debris caught in the grill.

Clean the Speaker Grille

Dust and pocket lint love to collect in the small holes of the speaker. Take a close look at the grille on the bottom edge of the phone. Use a soft, dry toothbrush or a clean, dry paintbrush to gently sweep across the openings.

You can also use a can of compressed air, but hold it upright and use very short bursts from a few inches away. Never use a pin or SIM eject tool, as you can easily damage the speaker behind the grill.

Restart Your OnePlus Nord 4

A simple restart clears out temporary software bugs that can affect audio. Just press and hold the power button on the right side, then tap "Restart" on the screen. Wait for the phone to fully boot back up.

If the phone is completely unresponsive or the restart doesn't help, perform a force restart. Press and hold the power button for about 10 seconds or until you feel it vibrate and the OnePlus logo appears. This is a hard reset that doesn't erase any data.

Check for App-Specific Sound Issues

If sound works in some apps but not others, the problem is likely with that specific app. First, try closing the app completely. Swipe up from the bottom and hold, then swipe the app window away.

Then, check the app's own sound settings. For example, in YouTube or Spotify, look for a mute icon within the app's player. Some apps also have in-app volume controls that can be turned down independently of your system volume.

Review Do Not Disturb and Focus Modes

OxygenOS has several modes that can silence your phone. Go to Settings > Sound & vibration > Do Not Disturb. Make sure it's toggled off, or check the rules to see if it's scheduled to turn on automatically.

Also, swipe down with two fingers from the top to see your full settings and look for "Zen Mode" or "Bedtime Mode" tiles. If these are active, they can suppress all sounds and notifications.

Boot Into Safe Mode

Safe Mode temporarily disables all third-party apps. If your speaker works fine here, you know a recently downloaded app is causing the conflict. To enter Safe Mode, press and hold the power button until the power menu appears.

Then, tap and hold the "Power off" option on your screen. A prompt will ask if you want to reboot to Safe Mode. Tap "OK". Your phone will restart with "Safe Mode" visible in the bottom corner. Test your speaker now.

To exit Safe Mode, simply restart your phone normally. If the sound works in Safe Mode, start uninstalling apps you installed around the time the problem began.

Clear the System Cache

Corrupted cache files from old updates or apps can mess with system functions like audio. You'll need to use the recovery menu. First, power off your Nord 4 completely.

Now, press and hold the Volume Down button and the Power button together. When the OnePlus logo appears, release both buttons. You'll be in Recovery Mode. Use the volume buttons to highlight "Wipe data and cache" and press the power button to select it.

Then, choose "Wipe cache" and confirm. This process only takes a moment and won't delete any of your personal photos, messages, or apps. When it's done, select "Reboot" to start your phone normally.

Update OxygenOS

OnePlus regularly releases updates that fix bugs, including audio-related ones. Connect to Wi-Fi and go to Settings > About device > OxygenOS version. Tap on the icon at the top to check for an update.

If an update is available, tap "Download and install". I'd recommend doing this while your phone is plugged into its included 100W charger, as the update process can use a fair bit of battery. After the update, your phone will restart and you should test the speaker again.

Reset All Settings

If you're still having issues and you've ruled out hardware, this resets all your system settings to default without touching your personal data. It will erase your Wi-Fi passwords, Bluetooth pairings, and custom preferences, so be prepared to set those up again.

Go to Settings > Additional settings > Back up and reset > Reset phone. Here, choose "Reset all settings (network, app preferences, etc.)" and enter your lock screen password to confirm. After the phone reboots, check if the speaker is working.
