Seeing your OnePlus Nord 4's screen flicker, flash, or show weird lines is incredibly annoying. It can make using your phone feel broken. This usually comes down to a software hiccup in OxygenOS, a problematic app, or a display setting that's not playing nice. Let's get it sorted.
Force Restart Your Phone
This is the quickest fix for a temporary software glitch. Just press and hold the power button on the right side for about 10 seconds. Keep holding it until you see the OnePlus logo appear, then let go. I'd start with this one, as it clears the phone's temporary memory and often resolves random display issues immediately.
Check for a Software Update
OnePlus regularly pushes out updates that fix bugs, including display problems. Go to Settings > About device > OxygenOS version and tap on the version number to check for an update. If one is available, install it. Since the Nord 4 runs Android 14 with OxygenOS 14, there's a good chance a recent update could have introduced or fixed this specific flicker.
Disable Adaptive Brightness
The light sensor that controls auto-brightness can sometimes cause flickering if it's confused. Head to Settings > Display & brightness > Adaptive brightness and turn it off. After that, manually adjust your brightness slider to a comfortable level and see if the screen stabilizes.
Close Problematic Apps
A single misbehaving app can cause all sorts of display trouble. Swipe up from the bottom and hold to enter the recent apps menu, then swipe up on every app to close them all. Restart your phone after doing this, then open apps one at a time to see if the flickering returns with a specific one.
Turn Off Video Color Enhancer and Vision Comfort
OxygenOS has a few display enhancement features that can conflict. Go to Settings > Display & brightness. First, tap on Screen color mode and make sure it's set to Natural or Gentle, not Vivid. Then, go back and turn off Video color enhancer. Finally, check Vision comfort and disable any scheduled or always-on blue light filter, as this can sometimes cause a pulsing effect.
Boot Into Safe Mode
Safe mode temporarily disables all third-party apps. If the flickering stops in Safe Mode, you know a downloaded app is the culprit. To enter it, press and hold the power button until the power menu appears, then long-press the "Power off" option on screen. Tap "OK" when prompted to reboot to Safe Mode. Check your screen. To exit, just restart your phone normally.
Reset All Settings
This will revert all your system settings, like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and display preferences, back to factory defaults without touching your photos or apps. It can fix deep configuration conflicts. Go to Settings > Additional settings > Back up and reset > Reset phone > Reset all settings. Enter your lock screen PIN if asked and confirm. You'll need to set up your preferences again, but it often clears stubborn glitches.
Inspect for Physical Issues
The Nord 4 has a solid metal unibody, which is great for durability and heat dissipation, but a hard drop can still damage the internal display or loosen a connector. Look closely at the screen for any new cracks, spots, or areas of discoloration. If the flickering started after an impact, it's likely a hardware issue. Also, try gently flexing the phone or applying light pressure to different parts of the frame while it's on to see if the flickering changes, which could indicate a loose connection.
Perform a Factory Reset
If all else fails, a full reset is the last software step. Make absolutely sure you have a recent backup. Go to Settings > Additional settings > Back up and reset > Reset phone > Erase all data (factory reset). After the phone wipes itself and reboots, set it up as new without restoring your apps right away. If the screen is perfect on a fresh system, the problem was software. If the flickering remains on a clean install, it's a hardware fault that needs service.
