If your OnePlus Nord 4 is getting uncomfortably warm, you're not alone. That metal unibody, while great for build quality and heat dissipation, can sometimes feel the heat a bit too much. Overheating can slow your phone down, shorten battery life, and just make it unpleasant to use. Let's get it cooled off.
The very first thing I'd try is a simple force restart. Just press and hold the power button for about 10 seconds until you see the OnePlus logo appear. This clears out any temporary software glitches that might be making the processor work overtime. It's a quick fix that solves a surprising number of heat issues.
Check What's Running in the Background
Android apps, especially social media and games, can keep running and using resources even after you close them. Swipe down from the top of your screen twice to open the quick settings panel, then tap the three-dot menu and select Resource Manager. Here, you can see which apps are using the most CPU and battery.
If you spot an app you're not actively using, force stop it. Go to Settings > Apps, select the app, and tap Force stop. For persistent offenders, check its battery optimization settings under Battery > More battery settings > App battery management.
Adjust Your Display and Performance Settings
The Nord 4's bright, high-refresh-rate screen is a major source of heat. Lowering the brightness can have an immediate cooling effect. Also, consider dropping the refresh rate from 120Hz to 60Hz for everyday tasks. You can find this in Settings > Display & brightness > Screen refresh rate.
Switch your performance mode to a less aggressive setting. Head to Settings > Battery and look for the performance mode selector. Using Low Power Mode or Balanced instead of High Performance will reduce heat generation significantly during normal use.
Be Smart About Charging
The included 100W SuperVOOC charger is incredibly fast, but fast charging generates more heat. If your phone is already warm, try using a slower charger for a while. The 0 to 100% in 28 minutes is great when you're in a rush, but a standard 18W or 30W charger will keep things much cooler.
Always use the official cable and charger, or high-quality certified alternatives. Never charge your phone on a soft surface like a bed or couch, as this traps heat. Place it on a hard, cool surface like a nightstand or desk. And if you can, avoid using the phone intensively, especially for gaming, while it's plugged in.
Update Your Software
OnePlus regularly releases OxygenOS updates that include optimizations for thermal management and battery usage. Outdated software can sometimes have bugs that cause excessive CPU usage. Go to Settings > About device > OxygenOS version and tap to check for updates.
While you're there, also check for app updates in the Google Play Store. Developers often release patches that fix performance and efficiency issues which can contribute to overheating.
Manage Your Connectivity Features
Features that constantly search for signals can warm up your phone. If you're in an area with poor cellular reception, your modem works harder, generating heat. Try switching to Airplane mode for a short while to see if the temperature drops, then turn it off again.
Turn off Bluetooth, GPS (Location), and Wi-Fi scanning when you don't need them. For GPS, you can set apps to use Wi-Fi and mobile network only instead of High accuracy mode in your location settings. This reduces the constant radio activity.
Clear the Cache Partition
Corrupted system cache files can cause background processes to misbehave and heat up the phone. Clearing the cache partition is a safe way to clean this out without touching your personal data. First, power off your Nord 4 completely.
Press and hold the Volume Down and Power buttons together until the OnePlus logo appears, then release. Use the volume buttons to navigate to Wipe data and cache and press the power button to select. Then choose Wipe cache and confirm. Finally, select Reboot.
Evaluate Your Case and Environment
A thick or poorly ventilated case can act like a blanket, trapping the heat the metal body is trying to dissipate. Try removing the case for a bit, especially during heavy use or charging, to see if it makes a difference. Consider using a slimmer, more breathable case.
Never leave your phone in direct sunlight, like on a car dashboard. Ambient temperature has a huge impact. Using your Nord 4 outside on a hot day, even just for navigation, will naturally make it run warmer than it would in an air-conditioned room.
Identify Problematic Apps
Sometimes, one specific app is the culprit. If the overheating seems to start during or after using a particular game or social media app, that's a strong clue. After using the app, go to Settings > Battery > Battery usage to see its impact.
You can try clearing that app's cache and data (in Settings > Apps), or uninstalling and reinstalling it. As a last resort for essential apps, you can restrict its background activity in the battery settings to prevent it from running when you're not using it.
