When your OnePlus Nord 4 stops syncing email, it can leave you waiting on important messages. Whether you're using Gmail, Outlook, or another provider, the fixes are usually straightforward. I'd start by checking the basics before moving to more specific steps.
First, make sure you have a solid internet connection, either on Wi-Fi or mobile data. It's also worth a quick check on your email provider's status page to rule out a widespread service outage. Finally, double-check that you're using the correct email address and password.
Force Close and Reopen Your Email App
This is often the quickest fix for a temporary app glitch. Swipe up from the bottom of your screen and hold to enter the recent apps view. Find your email app, like Gmail or Outlook, and swipe it up to close it completely. Wait a few seconds, then tap the app icon to reopen it and see if emails start flowing in.
Check Your Sync and Background Data Settings
Android and OxygenOS have settings that control how apps sync in the background. Go to Settings > Accounts & sync. Find your email account here and make sure the sync toggle is turned on. If it's already on, try turning it off and back on again to refresh the connection.
Next, check background data restrictions. Navigate to Settings > Apps > select your email app > Mobile data & Wi-Fi. Ensure that "Allow background data usage" is enabled. This lets the app check for new emails even when it's not actively open on your screen.
Toggle Airplane Mode to Reset Network Connections
A simple network reset can clear up temporary connectivity hiccups. Swipe down from the top of your screen twice to open the Quick Settings panel. Tap the airplane icon to enable Airplane Mode, which will turn off Wi-Fi, mobile data, and Bluetooth.
Wait about 30 seconds, then tap the airplane icon again to disable it. Your Nord 4 will reconnect to your networks. This can often resolve issues where the phone is connected to the internet but apps aren't communicating properly.
Switch Between Wi-Fi and Mobile Data
Sometimes the problem is with one specific type of connection. If you're on Wi-Fi and emails aren't syncing, try turning it off to force the phone to use your mobile data. You can do this from the Quick Settings panel.
If the issue happens on mobile data, do the reverse. Go to Settings > Mobile network and toggle off "Mobile data," then connect to a known-good Wi-Fi network. This test helps you pinpoint where the connection problem is.
Verify Your Email Account Credentials
Passwords expire or get changed, especially if you use two-factor authentication. Try logging into your email account through a web browser on a computer or another device. If you can't log in there, you'll need to reset your password through your email provider's website.
Once you have the correct password, you'll need to update it on your Nord 4. Go to Settings > Accounts & sync, tap on your email account, and look for an option to update the password or re-enter your account info.
Clear the Email App's Cache and Data
Corrupted cache files can cause all sorts of strange behavior, including sync failures. Clearing them is safe and won't delete your emails, as those are stored on the server. Go to Settings > Apps > select your email app > Storage usage.
Tap "Clear cache" first and test the app. If the problem persists, you can tap "Clear data." Be aware that this will remove the app's settings and log you out, so you'll need to sign back into your account afterward.
Check for App and System Updates
Outdated software is a common culprit. Open the Google Play Store, tap your profile picture, and go to Manage apps & device. Check under "Updates available" to see if your email app needs an update. Developers frequently release patches for sync issues.
Also check for a system update. OxygenOS updates can include important connectivity fixes. Go to Settings > About device > OxygenOS version and tap "Check for update." If an update is available, it's best to install it while your phone is charging, as the 100W SuperVOOC charger will get it done quickly.
Review Your Battery Optimization Settings
To save battery, Android can restrict what apps do in the background. Sometimes it's too aggressive. Go to Settings > Battery > More battery settings > App battery management.
Find your email app in the list. If its optimization is set to "Smart" or "Restrict," change it to "Don't optimize." This tells your Nord 4 to allow the app to sync freely without battery-saving restrictions.
Remove and Re-add Your Email Account
This is a more thorough reset for the account connection itself. Go to Settings > Accounts & sync, select your problematic email account, and tap "Remove account" or "Delete account." Confirm the action.
Don't worry, this only removes the account from your phone, not from the email service. After removing it, go back to Accounts & sync and tap "Add account." Follow the prompts to set it up again from scratch, which can clear up any corrupted configuration data.
Disable Any Active VPN Connections
A VPN is great for privacy, but it can sometimes interfere with the specific ports and protocols email apps use. If you have a VPN app running, open it and disconnect. You can also check in Settings > Network & internet > VPN to see if any connections are active.
Try accessing your email with the VPN off. If the sync starts working, you know the VPN was the issue. You may need to adjust your VPN's settings or use a split-tunneling feature to exclude your email app from the VPN tunnel.
Ensure Automatic Date and Time is Enabled
Incorrect time settings can break secure connections to email servers. Your Nord 4 needs the correct time for security certificates to validate. Go to Settings > Additional settings > Date & time.
Make sure "Use network-provided time" and "Use network-provided time zone" are both turned on. This allows your phone to automatically get the correct time from your mobile carrier or Wi-Fi network.
Perform a Force Restart on Your Nord 4
A full reboot can clear out deeper system glitches that a simple app close won't fix. Press and hold the Power button on the right side of your Nord 4 for about 10 seconds. Keep holding until you feel a vibration and see the OnePlus logo appear on the screen, then release.
This forces the phone to shut down and boot back up cleanly. It's different from a normal restart and can resolve temporary software freezes affecting all apps, including email.
Check Notification Settings for the App
If emails are actually arriving in your inbox but you're not being alerted, the issue is with notifications, not sync. Long-press on your email app's icon on the home screen and tap App info. Then, go to Notifications.
Here, make sure "Allow notifications" is turned on. You can also tap on specific notification categories, like "New mail," to ensure they are enabled and set to make a sound or vibrate.
Try an Alternative Email App
If the problem seems isolated to one app, like the pre-installed Gmail, trying a different client can be a great diagnostic step. Apps like Microsoft Outlook, Spark, or Edison Mail are available on the Play Store.
Set up your same email account in the new app. If it syncs perfectly, then the issue is with the original app's installation or configuration on your phone. You can then decide to stick with the new app or use this info to further troubleshoot the first one.
Reset Your Network Settings
This is a more significant step that resets all Wi-Fi, mobile data, and Bluetooth connections to factory defaults. You'll need to re-enter Wi-Fi passwords afterward. Go to Settings > Additional settings > Back up and reset > Reset phone.
Tap "Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth." Confirm your PIN or password if prompted. This won't delete any personal data like photos or emails, but it can fix deep-seated network configuration errors that might be blocking your email app from connecting to its servers.
