When your OnePlus 13 Pro's volume buttons stop responding, it can feel like you've lost a key part of the phone's basic controls. You press them, but nothing happens, no volume change, no haptic feedback. The good news is that most of the time, this is a software hiccup or a simple obstruction that you can fix yourself without needing a trip to a service center.
Before assuming the worst, work through these practical fixes. I'd start with the simplest ones first, as they often do the trick.
Remove Your Phone Case
This is the easiest place to begin. Take off your OnePlus 13 Pro's case. Sometimes, a case can be slightly misaligned or have a worn-out button cover that physically blocks the volume rocker from being pressed properly.
With the case off, test the buttons directly. If they work, you've found the culprit. Consider trying a different case or checking if your current one needs cleaning around the button cutouts.
Perform a Force Restart
A force restart is a great way to clear out temporary software glitches that can cause hardware controls to freeze. This won't delete any of your personal data or settings.
For the OnePlus 13 Pro, press and hold the Volume Down button and the Power button simultaneously for about 10 seconds. You'll feel the device vibrate and then see the OnePlus logo as it reboots.
Once it's back on, test the volume buttons immediately. This simple reset resolves a surprising number of unresponsive button reports.
Check for Software Updates
Since your phone runs OxygenOS 15 on top of Android 15, software bugs can occasionally affect hardware functionality. OnePlus regularly releases updates that include fixes for such issues.
Go to Settings > About device > Software update to check for any available updates. Make sure your phone is connected to Wi-Fi and has sufficient battery before installing.
Clean the Volume Rocker
Dust, lint, and pocket debris are common enemies of clicky buttons. Over time, they can work their way into the small gap around the volume rocker, preventing it from making proper contact.
You can try gently blowing compressed air around the edges of the button. For more stubborn grime, power off the phone and use a dry, soft-bristled brush or a cotton swab with a tiny amount of isopropyl alcohol.
Be very gentle to avoid pushing debris further inside. Let any moisture evaporate completely before turning the phone back on.
Test the Buttons in Safe Mode
Booting into Safe Mode temporarily disables all third-party apps you've installed. If the volume buttons work perfectly in Safe Mode, then a recently downloaded app is likely interfering with the system.
To enter Safe Mode on the OnePlus 13 Pro, press and hold the power button until the power menu appears. Then, press and hold the "Power off" option on your screen. You'll get a prompt to reboot to Safe Mode.
Test the volume buttons here. If they work, restart normally and try uninstalling apps you installed around the time the problem started.
Check Accessibility Settings
Some accessibility features can remap or alter how the physical buttons function. It's worth a quick look to make sure nothing is accidentally enabled.
Head to Settings > Additional settings > Accessibility. Look through options like "Volume key shortcut" or any button remapping services. Make sure they are set to your preference or turned off.
Use On-Screen Volume Controls
While you're troubleshooting, remember you can still adjust volume without the buttons. Swipe down from the top of the screen to open the Quick Settings panel.
You'll find a volume slider there that you can drag. You can also adjust media volume directly within apps like YouTube or Spotify by tapping the screen and using the on-screen slider.
Inspect for Physical Damage
Take a close look at the volume rocker itself. Has the phone been dropped recently? Look for any dents, cracks, or misalignment around the button area.
Try pressing the button at different points along its length. Sometimes, one side of the rocker can get stuck or damaged while the other still works. Listen and feel for the distinct click of the mechanical switch.
Reset All Settings
This is a stronger step than a simple restart but less drastic than a full factory reset. It will revert all your system settings (like Wi-Fi passwords, ringtones, and display preferences) back to default without touching your personal photos, messages, or apps.
Go to Settings > Additional settings > Back up and reset > Reset phone > Reset all settings. After the phone reboots, you'll need to reconfigure your preferences, but it can clear out corrupted settings causing the button issue.
Consider a Factory Reset
If every other step has failed, a factory reset is the final software solution. This will erase everything on your phone, so it's crucial to back up your data first using Google One or the OnePlus Clone Phone app.
Once backed up, you can initiate the reset from the same menu: Settings > Additional settings > Back up and reset > Reset phone > Erase all data (factory reset). After the reset and setup, test the buttons on a fresh system.
