When the sound cuts out on your OnePlus 12, it can be pretty jarring. You might miss a call, a video goes silent, or your music just stops. The good news is that most audio problems on the OnePlus 12 are caused by simple software settings or minor glitches that you can fix yourself.

I'd start with the quick checks first. They solve the majority of issues and only take a minute.

Check Your Volume and Sound Mode

First, press the volume up button on the side of your phone. Make sure you're not in Silent or Vibrate mode. You can check this by looking at the status bar at the top of your screen for a bell icon with a slash through it.

For more control, go into Settings > Sound & vibration. Here, you can adjust the media, ringtone, and alarm volumes individually with sliders. Ensure the "Sound mode" is set to "Ring" and not "Silent" or "Vibrate".

Disconnect Bluetooth and Accessories

Your OnePlus 12 might be trying to send audio to a device that isn't there anymore. If you've used wireless headphones or a speaker recently, the phone could still be connected to them.

Pull down the quick settings panel from the top of your screen and tap the Bluetooth icon to turn it off. You can also go to Settings > Bluetooth and manually disconnect any paired devices. Also, unplug any headphones or USB-C audio adapters, as they take priority over the internal speakers.

Clean the Speaker Grills

The OnePlus 12 has a bottom-firing speaker and an earpiece that doubles as a second speaker. Over time, pocket lint and dust can clog these tiny openings. Take a look at the grills with a flashlight.

Use a soft, dry toothbrush or a clean, dry paintbrush to gently sweep away any debris. You can also use a can of compressed air, but hold it upright and use very short bursts from a few inches away. Never poke anything sharp like a pin or paperclip into the grill, as you'll damage the speaker behind it.

Restart Your OnePlus 12

A simple restart clears out temporary software bugs that can affect audio. Just press and hold the power button, then tap "Restart" on the screen. Wait for the phone to fully boot back up and check if your sound has returned.

If the phone is completely unresponsive or the restart doesn't help, try a force restart. Press and hold the power button for about 10 to 15 seconds. Keep holding it until you feel a vibration and see the OnePlus logo appear on the screen, then release.

Check Do Not Disturb and App-Specific Settings

Sometimes, a system-wide setting is muting things. Swipe down twice from the top to open your full quick settings panel and make sure the "Do Not Disturb" tile isn't active. You can also check in Settings > Sound & vibration > Do Not Disturb.

Also, look at individual app permissions. Go to Settings > Apps, select the app that's having no sound (like YouTube or Spotify), then tap "Permissions". Make sure the "Microphone" permission is granted if needed, and check the app's own in-app sound settings.

Boot Into Safe Mode

If the problem started after installing a new app, that app could be the culprit. Booting into Safe Mode temporarily disables all third-party apps so you can test the system sound alone.

To enter Safe Mode, press and hold the power button until the power menu appears. Then, press and hold the "Power off" option on your screen. A prompt will appear asking if you want to reboot to Safe Mode. Tap "OK". If your sound works perfectly in Safe Mode, you know a downloaded app is causing the conflict. Restart normally to exit Safe Mode and try uninstalling apps you recently added.

Clear the Cache Partition

Corrupted system cache files can cause all sorts of odd behavior, including audio issues. Clearing this cache is safe and won't delete any of your personal data like photos or messages.

First, turn off your OnePlus 12 completely. Now, press and hold the volume down button and the power button at the same time. Keep holding them until you feel a strong vibration, then release. You'll see the OnePlus logo and then enter recovery mode.

Use the volume buttons to highlight "Wipe data and cache" and press the power button to select it. Then, choose "Wipe cache" and confirm. Once it's done, select "Reboot" to start your phone normally.

Update Your Software

OnePlus regularly releases OxygenOS updates that fix bugs. An outdated system could have a known audio glitch that's already been patched.

Connect to Wi-Fi and go to Settings > About device > OxygenOS version. Tap on the top banner that says "Check for update". If an update is available, follow the prompts to download and install it. It's a good idea to plug your phone into the charger during this process.

Reset All Settings

If you've tried everything else and the sound is still broken, you can reset all your system settings to their defaults. This won't erase your photos, apps, or accounts, but it will reset things like your Wi-Fi passwords, Bluetooth pairings, and custom sound profiles.

Go to Settings > Additional settings > Back up and reset. Tap on "Reset phone" and then choose "Reset all settings (network, app preferences, etc.)". Confirm your choice and enter your lock screen PIN if prompted. Your phone will reboot, and you'll need to reconfigure your preferences, but this often resolves deep-seated software conflicts.
