A flickering screen on your OnePlus 12 is incredibly distracting, turning a smooth experience into a frustrating one. You might see the display flash, pulse, or show erratic lines, especially at lower brightness levels. This can be triggered by a software bug, a problematic display setting, or a deeper hardware issue. Let's get it fixed.
Force Restart Your OnePlus 12
This is the universal first step for any weird glitch. Press and hold the Power button on the right side for a solid 10 to 15 seconds. Keep holding until you feel a vibration and see the OnePlus logo appear, then release. This forces a clean reboot and clears out any temporary software hiccups that could be causing the flicker.
Disable Adaptive Brightness
OxygenOS uses ambient light sensors to adjust your screen brightness automatically. If those sensors get confused, it can cause the display to flicker as it tries to constantly recalibrate. Head to Settings > Display & brightness and turn off the toggle for Adaptive brightness. After disabling it, manually set your preferred brightness level and see if the flickering stops.
Turn Off the Screen Color Mode
Your OnePlus 12 has different color profiles like Vivid and Natural. Sometimes, these advanced display modes can have conflicts with certain apps or system processes. Go to Settings > Display & brightness > Screen color mode. Try switching from Vivid to Natural, or vice versa, to see if the flickering changes or disappears.
Check for a Software Update
OnePlus frequently releases OxygenOS updates that include bug fixes and display optimizations. An outdated system could be the root cause. Open Settings > About device > OxygenOS version and tap on the top banner to check for updates. If one is available, download and install it immediately, as display flicker is a common issue addressed in patches.
Close All Recent Apps
A specific app running in the background might be misbehaving and causing graphical corruption. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and hold to enter the recent apps menu. Swipe up on each app preview to close it completely. Once all apps are closed, check your home screen. If the flicker is gone, you can reopen your apps one by one to try and identify which one was the problem.
Boot Into Safe Mode
Safe mode temporarily disables all third-party apps. If the flickering stops in safe mode, you know a downloaded app is the culprit. To enter safe mode, press and hold the power button until the power menu appears. Then, tap and hold the "Power off" option on your screen until you see a prompt to reboot to safe mode. Tap OK. If the screen is stable here, you'll need to uninstall recently updated or installed apps to find the bad one.
Reset Your Display Settings
If the flickering seems tied to specific brightness levels or colors, resetting all display preferences can help. Navigate to Settings > Additional settings > Back up and reset > Reset phone > Reset app preferences. This won't delete your personal data, but it will reset all your display, notification, and app permission settings back to default, which can clear up configuration conflicts.
Inspect for Physical Damage
If the flickering started after you dropped the phone or it sustained an impact, the issue could be physical. Look closely at the screen for any new cracks, even tiny ones, or areas where the display shows unusual pressure marks or color blotches. A loose internal display cable or a damaged panel often requires professional repair.
Perform a Factory Reset
This is the last resort software fix. Before you begin, ensure all your important data is backed up to your Google account or locally. Then, go to Settings > Additional settings > Back up and reset > Reset phone > Erase all data (factory reset). If the flickering persists on a completely fresh install of OxygenOS, the issue is almost certainly hardware-related and will need service attention.
