When your OnePlus 12's keyboard disappears or you get an error saying it's stopped, it can really stop you in your tracks. The good news is this is a common Android glitch that you can almost always fix yourself without losing any data.

I'd start with the simplest fix first. A quick force restart of your phone clears out temporary software hiccups that can cause the keyboard to freeze. Just press and hold the Power button for about 10 to 15 seconds until you feel the phone vibrate and the OnePlus logo appears on the screen.

Force Stop and Restart the Keyboard App

If a restart didn't do it, the next step is to force stop the keyboard app itself. This is like giving it a fresh start. Open your Settings and go to Apps.

You'll need to see all apps, including system ones. Tap the three-dot menu in the top right and select Show system apps. Now, scroll down and find the keyboard you're using.

If you're using the default OnePlus keyboard, look for OnePlus Keyboard. Tap on it, then tap Force Stop. Confirm if prompted, then exit Settings and try opening your keyboard again in a messaging app.

Clear the Keyboard's Cache and Data

Corrupted temporary files, known as cache, can cause the keyboard to misbehave. Clearing this cache is safe and won't delete your personal typing data, but clearing the app data will reset the keyboard to its default settings.

Go back to Settings > Apps > OnePlus Keyboard (or your third-party keyboard). Tap on Storage & cache. First, tap Clear cache. Test the keyboard. If it's still not working, come back here and tap Clear storage or Clear data.

Remember, clearing data will erase any custom dictionaries, themes, or layouts you've set up. You'll have to set those preferences again.

Check for Keyboard and System Updates

An outdated keyboard app can have bugs that newer versions fix. Open the Google Play Store, tap your profile icon, and go to Manage apps & device.

Under "Updates available," see if your keyboard app is listed. If you use Gboard or SwiftKey, update them here. It's also crucial to check for a system update, as OxygenOS updates often include stability patches.

Go to Settings > About device > OxygenOS version. Tap on the icon with three dots, then select Check for update. Download and install any available update for your OnePlus 12.

Reset Your Keyboard Settings

If you've changed a lot of settings, something might have gotten misconfigured. You can reset just the keyboard settings without affecting the rest of your phone. Head to Settings > Additional settings > Keyboard & input method.

Tap on Virtual keyboard and then select the keyboard you use as your default (like OnePlus Keyboard or Gboard). Look for an option labeled Reset settings or something similar. This will revert all its preferences back to factory defaults.

Boot Into Safe Mode

This is a great way to figure out if a recently downloaded app is causing a conflict. Safe mode temporarily disables all third-party apps. First, press and hold the Power button until the power menu appears.

Then, press and hold the Power off option on your screen. A prompt will appear asking if you want to reboot to safe mode. Tap OK. Your phone will restart, and "Safe mode" will appear in the bottom corner.

Try using your keyboard now. If it works perfectly in safe mode, you know a downloaded app is the culprit. Start by uninstalling apps you installed just before the keyboard problem began.

Try a Different Keyboard App

Sometimes the fastest solution is to just switch keyboards as a workaround. Popular options like Gboard (Google's keyboard) or Microsoft SwiftKey are free on the Play Store.

Once installed, go to Settings > Additional settings > Keyboard & input method > Virtual keyboard. Tap on Manage keyboards and toggle on your new keyboard. Then, you can set it as your default input method.

Reset All System Settings

This is a more significant step but still won't touch your photos, messages, or apps. It resets all your system settings, like Wi-Fi passwords, Bluetooth pairings, and display preferences, back to default. It can resolve deeper configuration conflicts.

Go to Settings > Additional settings > Back up & reset. Tap on Reset phone. Here, select Reset all settings. Enter your lock screen PIN if asked, and confirm. Your phone will reboot. You'll need to reconfigure your settings, but your keyboard should be functional.

After trying these steps, your OnePlus 12's keyboard should be responding again. Most issues are solved within the first few fixes, especially clearing the cache or checking for an update.
