If your OnePlus 12 is running out of juice way too quickly, you're not alone. That big, bright screen and powerful processor need a lot of power, and sometimes software settings or apps can work against the large battery. Let's start with the most common fix and then work through the rest.

Check Battery Usage and Health

Before you change anything, you need to know what's using your power. Head to Settings > Battery > Battery usage. This screen shows you exactly which apps have been draining your battery over the last 24 hours or the past week.

Look for any app using a surprisingly high percentage. Social media apps, games, and navigation apps are often the culprits. If you see an app you don't use much at the top of the list, that's a red flag. You can also check your battery's overall health here to see if its capacity is degrading.

Manage App Battery Usage

Once you've identified a power-hungry app, you can restrict its background activity. Go to Settings > Apps > [App Name] > Battery usage. You'll see options like "Allow background activity" and "Allow foreground activity."

For apps that don't need to run constantly, like social media or news apps, toggle off "Allow background activity." This prevents them from refreshing in the background and saves a significant amount of power. I'd start with this for any app showing high usage that you don't need instant notifications from.

Adjust Your Display Settings

The display is the single biggest battery drain on any phone. On your OnePlus 12, you have a few key controls. First, lower the brightness. You can do this quickly from the notification shade, or set it in Settings > Display & brightness.

Next, reduce the screen timeout. A shorter time means the screen turns off faster when you're not using it. Go to Settings > Display & brightness > Screen timeout and set it to 30 seconds or 1 minute. Also, consider using Dark Mode, as the phone's OLED screen uses less power to display black pixels.

Control Location Services

Having your GPS on all the time for every app is a major drain. Go to Settings > Location. You can turn it off entirely here if you don't need it, but a better approach is to manage it per app.

Tap on "App location permission" to see a list of all your apps. Change any app that doesn't genuinely need to know where you are to "Allow only while using the app" or "Deny." This stops apps like weather widgets or social media from constantly pinging your location in the background.

Turn Off Unused Connectivity Features

Features like Bluetooth, NFC, and Wi-Fi are constantly searching for connections if left on. If you're not using a smartwatch or wireless earbuds, turn Bluetooth off from the quick settings panel. The same goes for NFC if you're not making mobile payments.

For Wi-Fi, if you're out and about and not connected to a network, it's better to turn it off. Your phone will otherwise keep scanning for open networks, which uses extra power. You can easily toggle all these from the notification shade.

Disable Always-On Display and Raise to Wake

The OnePlus 12 has an Always-On Display feature that shows the time and notifications even when the screen is off. While convenient, it does use battery. You can turn it off in Settings > Display & brightness > Always-on display.

Similarly, "Raise to wake," which lights up the screen when you pick up the phone, can cause unnecessary activations. You can find this in Settings > Display & brightness > Raise to wake. Turning it off forces you to tap the screen or press the power button to see notifications, which saves power.

Update Your Software and Apps

Software updates from OnePlus often include optimizations and bug fixes that can improve battery life. Check for an update by going to Settings > About device > OxygenOS version and tapping on the icon at the top.

Outdated apps can also have bugs that cause excessive battery drain. Open the Google Play Store, tap your profile icon, and go to "Manage apps & device." Apply any available updates, as developers frequently release patches for performance issues.

Use Optimized Charging and Battery Care

Your OnePlus 12 has a feature called Optimized charging, designed to extend your battery's long-term health. It learns your routine and delays charging past 80% until you need to use the phone. If you find your phone stopping at 80%, check Settings > Battery > Optimized charging.

You can turn it off if you always need a full charge immediately. Also in the Battery settings, look for "Battery health" or similar options that might help manage charging patterns to reduce wear on the battery over time.

Limit Background Data and Refresh

Many apps refresh content in the background using mobile data or Wi-Fi. You can restrict this. Go to Settings > Connections & internet > Data usage > Data saver and turn it on. This restricts background data for all apps.

For more control, go to Settings > Apps > [App Name] > Mobile data & Wi-Fi. Here you can toggle off "Background data" for specific apps. This means they'll only update when you open them.

Perform a Force Restart

Sometimes, a simple software glitch can cause a process to run wild and drain the battery. A force restart can clear this up without deleting any of your data. Just press and hold the Power button for 10 to 15 seconds until the OnePlus logo appears and the phone restarts.

This is different from a normal restart and can resolve temporary system hiccups. It's a good first step if the battery drain started suddenly without any major changes to your settings or new app installs.

Reset All Settings

If you've tried everything and the drain persists, a more thorough step is to reset all your system settings. This will revert your Wi-Fi passwords, Bluetooth pairings, and display settings back to default, but it won't touch your photos, apps, or personal files.

Go to Settings > Additional settings > Back up and reset > Reset phone > Reset all settings. After the phone reboots, you'll need to reconfigure your preferences, but it can eliminate a problematic setting that's causing the drain.
