When the sound cuts out on your Nothing Phone (3), it can feel like you're missing a vital part of the experience. Whether it's media playback, ringtones, or notification chimes, audio issues are usually a temporary software hiccup. The good news is you can almost always fix it yourself with a few simple checks.
Check Your Volume and Sound Mode
Start with the most obvious fix. While playing music or a video, press the volume up button on the side of your phone. Make sure you haven't accidentally toggled the phone into silent mode by pressing the volume down button too many times.
You can also check the sound mode in your quick settings. Swipe down from the top of the screen twice to see all your toggle switches. Look for the sound mode icon and make sure it's set to "Ring" or "Sound," not "Vibrate" or "Silent."
Disconnect Bluetooth and Accessories
Your Nothing Phone (3) might be trying to send audio to a paired device. Swipe down and open your quick settings panel, then long-press the Bluetooth icon. This will take you directly to the Bluetooth menu where you can see all connected devices.
If you see headphones, speakers, or a car system listed, tap the settings icon next to it and choose "Disconnect." For a complete reset, you can toggle the main Bluetooth switch off for a moment. Also, remove any magnetic Qi2 or MagSafe accessories, as they can sometimes interfere with audio routing.
Clean the Speaker Grilles
The transparent design and Glyph Interface on the Nothing Phone (3) have precise speaker cutouts. Over time, pocket lint and dust can get packed into these small openings, muffling the sound completely.
Take a close look at the bottom edge of the phone and the earpiece slit at the top. Use a soft, dry toothbrush or a clean makeup brush to gently sweep away any visible debris. You can also use a can of compressed air, but hold it upright and use very short bursts from a few inches away.
Restart Your Phone
A simple restart clears out temporary glitches in Nothing OS that could be affecting the audio system. Just press and hold the power button until the power menu appears, then tap "Restart." Wait for the phone to fully boot back up and check your sound.
If the touchscreen isn't responding, you'll need to force a restart. Press and hold the Volume Down button and the Power button together for about 10 to 15 seconds. Let go when you see the Nothing logo appear on the screen.
Check App-Specific Sound Settings
Sometimes the problem isn't with your phone, but with a single app. If you only have no sound in YouTube, Spotify, or a specific game, the app's own settings might be muted. Open the problematic app and look for a volume or audio slider within its settings menu.
You can also check the system-level app permissions. Go to Settings > Apps > [App Name] > Permissions. Make sure the app has permission to access your microphone and media audio, as this can sometimes be linked to playback issues.
Review Do Not Disturb and Focus Modes
Nothing OS has robust Focus modes that can silence notifications and media. Swipe down and check your quick settings for an active Focus mode icon, like a crescent moon for "Do Not Disturb." If one is active, tap it to turn it off.
For a deeper check, go to Settings > Sound & vibration > Do Not Disturb. Look at the rules and schedules here to make sure you haven't set a time period where all sounds are automatically muted.
Boot Into Safe Mode
This will tell you if a recently downloaded third-party app is causing the conflict. To enter Safe Mode, press and hold the power button until the power menu appears. Then, long-press the "Power off" option on your screen.
A prompt will appear asking if you want to reboot into Safe Mode. Tap "OK." Your phone will restart, and "Safe mode" will appear in the bottom corner. If your sound works perfectly here, you know a downloaded app is the culprit. Restart normally to exit Safe Mode and start uninstalling recent apps one by one.
Clear the System Cache
Corrupted cache data from apps or the system can lead to audio problems. You'll need to use the recovery menu to clear this. First, power your phone off completely.
Now, press and hold the Volume Up button and the Power button at the same time. Keep holding them until you feel a vibration and see the Nothing recovery menu. Use the volume buttons to scroll to the "Wipe cache partition" option, then press the power button to select it. Confirm the action, then select "Reboot system now."
Update Nothing OS
Nothing frequently releases updates for Nothing OS that include bug fixes and performance improvements. An update might contain a specific patch for the audio issue you're experiencing.
Go to Settings > System > System update and tap "Check for update." If an update is available, make sure your phone is plugged in or has plenty of battery, and follow the prompts to install it. After the update completes, test your sound again.
