When the predictive text on your Nothing Phone (3) stops working, it can turn simple typing into a real chore. You might notice word suggestions disappearing, autocorrect making bizarre changes, or the entire keyboard feeling sluggish. The good news is this is almost always a software hiccup you can fix yourself. Let's get your keyboard back to predicting your thoughts.
Restart Your Phone First
This is the quickest thing to try and it solves a surprising number of glitches. A simple restart clears out temporary system bugs that might be interfering with the keyboard. Just hold the power button, tap restart, and give it a minute to boot back up. I'd start with this every time.
Check Your Keyboard Settings
Sometimes a setting gets accidentally toggled off. Open your Settings app and navigate to System > Languages & input > On-screen keyboard > Gboard. Tap on Text correction here. Make sure the switch for Show suggestion strip is turned on. While you're in this menu, also verify that Next-word suggestions is enabled.
If those are on but it's still not working, go back one screen in Gboard settings to Languages. Tap on the language you're using (like English US) and ensure the Layout is set to something like "QWERTY" and not a non-predictive option like "PC."
Clear the Gboard Cache and Data
This is often the most effective fix. The keyboard app stores temporary cache files that can become corrupted. Go to Settings > Apps > See all apps. Find and tap on Gboard in your app list. Tap Storage & cache.
First, tap Clear cache. This removes temporary files without affecting your personal dictionary or settings. If the problem persists, go back and tap Clear storage or Clear data. A warning will pop up, as this will reset Gboard to its default state, erasing any custom words you've added and your personalized preferences. After clearing data, you'll need to go through the Gboard setup again.
Update Gboard and Nothing OS
An outdated app or system software can cause compatibility issues. Open the Google Play Store, tap your profile icon, and go to Manage apps & device. Under "Updates available," look for Gboard and install any pending update.
It's also crucial to check for a system update. Nothing regularly releases OS updates that include bug fixes and performance improvements. Go to Settings > System > System update and tap "Check for update." Installing the latest Nothing OS build can resolve underlying system conflicts affecting the keyboard.
Try a Different Keyboard Temporarily
This helps you figure out if the problem is with Gboard specifically or with the phone's system. Install another keyboard from the Play Store, like Microsoft SwiftKey or OpenBoard. After installing, go to Settings > System > Languages & input > On-screen keyboard and enable it. You'll be prompted to switch keyboards the next time you type.
If predictive text works perfectly on the new keyboard, then the issue is isolated to Gboard. You can stick with the new one or use this knowledge to focus on fixing Gboard. If the new keyboard also has no predictions, it points to a deeper system issue.
Reset App Preferences
This is a broader reset that doesn't delete your app data but restores all system app settings to their defaults. It can fix issues caused by a misconfigured permission or setting. Go to Settings > System > Reset options. Tap on Reset app preferences and confirm.
This will reset disabled apps, notification settings, background data restrictions, and permission settings for all apps. You'll need to re-grant permissions when apps ask for them again. After the reset, open Gboard and test the predictive text. It often clears up odd behavior.
