When your Nothing Phone 2a's Settings app keeps closing or crashing, it can stop you from adjusting anything on your phone. This usually happens because of a temporary software glitch or some corrupted data in the app itself. The good news is you can almost always fix it yourself without losing any of your stuff.

Restart Your Phone 2a

This is the first thing you should try, and it works more often than you'd think. A simple restart clears out the phone's temporary memory and can stop the Settings app from misbehaving.

Just press and hold the power button, then tap "Restart" on the screen. If your screen is unresponsive, you can force a restart by holding the power button down for 10 to 15 seconds until you see the Nothing logo appear.

Clear the Settings App Cache

Your phone stores little bits of temporary data, called cache, to help apps like Settings open faster. Sometimes this data gets messed up and causes crashes. Clearing it is safe and won't delete your personal settings.

Since Settings might be crashing, getting to this menu can be tricky. Try swiping down from the top of your screen to open the quick settings panel, then tap the gear icon. If that opens Settings, go to Apps > See all apps. Find and tap on "Settings" in the list, then select Storage & cache. Tap Clear cache.

Update Nothing OS

Running an old version of the software can lead to bugs that cause system apps to crash. Nothing regularly releases updates that fix these kinds of issues.

To check, go to Settings > System > System update. Tap "Check for update." If an update is available, make sure your phone is plugged in or has plenty of battery, and install it. Your phone will restart when it's done, which might solve the problem on its own.

Check for Problematic Apps

Sometimes, an app you installed from the Play Store can interfere with system processes, even causing the Settings app to close. This is especially true for apps that request special accessibility permissions or overlay other apps.

Think about any new apps you installed just before the problem started. Try uninstalling them to see if the issue goes away. You can also boot your Phone 2a into Safe Mode, which temporarily disables all third-party apps. If Settings works fine in Safe Mode, you know a downloaded app is the culprit.

To enter Safe Mode, press and hold the power button until the power menu appears. Then, press and hold the "Power off" option on your screen. You'll see a prompt to reboot into Safe Mode. Tap it. To exit, just restart your phone normally.

Reset App Preferences

This is a useful middle-ground step. It resets all your app-related settings, like which apps are set as defaults, background data restrictions, and permission grants, back to their original state. It won't delete any app data or personal files.

Go to Settings > Apps > See all apps. Tap the three-dot menu in the top right and select Reset app preferences. Confirm your choice. Afterward, you'll need to re-grant permissions to apps when you use them next, but it can clear up conflicts causing Settings to crash.

Clear Data for Google Play Services

Google Play Services is a core background app that many system functions rely on. If it has an issue, it can cause unexpected behavior in other apps, including Settings.

Navigate to Settings > Apps > See all apps. Find and tap "Google Play Services." Go to Storage & cache and tap Manage storage. Here, tap Clear all data. Don't worry, this will rebuild itself. After doing this, restart your Phone 2a.

Perform a Factory Reset

If you've tried everything else and Settings is still unusable, a factory reset is the final step. This will erase everything on your phone and return it to its original out-of-the-box state. You must back up your photos, messages, and other important data first.

Since the Settings app might be crashing, you may need to use the hardware key method. First, power off your phone completely. Then, press and hold the Volume Up button and the Power button at the same time. When you feel a vibration, release the Power button but keep holding Volume Up until you see the recovery menu.

Use the volume buttons to highlight "Wipe data/factory reset" and press the power button to select it. Confirm the reset. Once it's complete, select "Reboot system now." Your Phone 2a will start fresh, and the Settings app should work perfectly.
