If your Nothing Phone 2a's fingerprint scanner is acting up, it can lock you out of your phone and apps pretty quickly. The optical sensor under the screen can be finicky, but most issues have a straightforward fix you can try right now.

Clean the Screen and Your Finger

This is the most common fix. The optical sensor needs a clear view of your fingerprint through the glass. Any smudge, dirt, or moisture on the screen right over the sensor area will block it.

Grab a microfiber cloth and give that section of the screen a good wipe. Make sure your own finger is clean and completely dry, too. Lotions, sweat, or even a tiny bit of food grease can be enough to cause a misread.

Restart Your Phone 2a

A quick reboot clears out temporary software glitches that might be confusing the sensor. Just press and hold the power button, then tap restart on the screen.

If the screen is unresponsive, you can force a restart by holding the power button down for a solid 10 to 15 seconds until you see the Nothing logo appear. Test the scanner again once it boots up.

Re-register Your Fingerprint

Sometimes the stored print data gets corrupted. Deleting the old one and setting it up fresh almost always helps. Head into Settings > Security & privacy > Fingerprint unlock.

Enter your PIN, tap the fingerprint you're having trouble with, and hit Delete. Now, tap Add fingerprint and follow the prompts. Press lightly and rotate your finger slowly to capture the edges during enrollment.

Check for a Software Update

Nothing regularly releases updates that can fix bugs, including ones related to biometrics. An outdated OS could be the culprit. Go to Settings > System > System update and tap Check for update.

If an update is available, install it. I'd recommend doing this while connected to Wi-Fi and with your phone plugged into its 45W charger, as the process can take a few minutes.

Inspect Your Screen Protector

A poorly applied screen protector, or one not designed for in-display fingerprint sensors, can cause major problems. If yours is thick, has air bubbles, or is peeling at the edges, it's likely interfering.

The best test is to temporarily remove it. If the scanner starts working perfectly, you need a different protector. Look for ones marketed as "fingerprint compatible" or "ultra-thin" for the best results on the Phone 2a.

Try a Different Finger or Position

Maybe the issue is with your specific finger. If you have another fingerprint registered, try that one. If it works, you know the problem is isolated to that first finger's data.

When you place your finger, make sure you're covering the entire sensor area (it's usually indicated by an icon on the lock screen). Don't press too hard or too softly, and hold it there for a full second instead of tapping.

Clear the System Cache

This is a deeper clean that won't touch your personal data. First, power off your Phone 2a completely. Now, press and hold the Volume Up button and the Power button at the same time.

When you feel a vibration, let go of the power button but keep holding volume up until you see the recovery menu. Use the volume buttons to navigate to Wipe cache partition and select it with the power button. Confirm, then select Reboot system now.

Check Your Security Settings

There are a couple of settings that can inadvertently lock the scanner out. First, go to Settings > Security & privacy > Device unlock. Make sure Fingerprint unlock is actually toggled on.

Also, check if you have any "Device admin" apps or particularly aggressive battery saver modes enabled that might be disabling biometrics in the background. Temporarily disabling them can help identify the cause.

Boot in Safe Mode

This starts your phone with all third-party apps disabled. If the fingerprint scanner works perfectly in Safe Mode, you know a recently installed app is causing a conflict. To enter Safe Mode, press and hold the power button until the power menu appears.

Then, tap and hold the Power off option on your screen. You'll get a prompt to reboot to Safe Mode. Tap it. Test the scanner. To exit, just restart your phone normally.

Register Multiple Fingerprints

Once you get it working, I'd set up a backup. Go back to Settings > Security & privacy > Fingerprint unlock and add a second print, perhaps from your other hand's thumb or index finger.

This gives you a fallback if one finger gets a minor cut or is just having an off day. It's also a good idea to ensure your PIN, pattern, or password is memorized, as you'll need it to re-add fingerprints if the sensor ever fails completely.
