The status light on your Nothing Ear (3) case keeps flashing, but your phone can't find the buds. Or maybe the buds show up in Bluetooth but the Nothing X app refuses to complete the setup. The case light stays active during the pairing window, so a long flashing sequence usually means the connection handshake hit a snag at some point.

The trick is narrowing down exactly where that snag lives. Is it the phone software, the buds' internal pairing state, or a conflict in the Nothing X app itself? Most cases trace back to one of a few common roadblocks, and they each have a straightforward fix.

Install and Open the Nothing X App First

The Nothing Ear (3) buds rely on the Nothing X app for the full pairing routine and feature setup. Without it, you won't get the prompt to configure ANC or the Personal Sound Profile. Download it from the App Store or Google Play Store and sign into your account if you have one.

Make sure the app is fully updated. A known crash on iOS 18.4 and later can prevent the app from launching at all, so check for an app update if it closes on you right after opening.

Wake Your Phone and Keep It Close

Bring the case within arm's reach of your unlocked phone. Open the case lid and leave both buds inside. The status light should start flashing white, indicating the buds are broadcasting. If nothing happens, press the button on the front of the case once to trigger the advertising mode.

Keep your phone screen on and active. If the phone sleeps or locks, the pairing card in the app may not appear.

Close the Case and Start Over

Close the case lid completely and count to 30. Opening it again resets the advertising state, giving you a fresh attempt. Take this chance to confirm your phone's Bluetooth is on under Settings > Bluetooth.

If the phone is already paired to a lot of other Bluetooth devices, turn off a few you aren't using. A congested Bluetooth stack can sometimes delay the handshake long enough for the pairing window to time out on the buds.

Forget the Buds From Your Phone's Bluetooth List

A lingering Bluetooth profile from a previous pairing can block a clean connection. Go to Settings > Bluetooth, find Nothing Ear (3) in the list, and tap Forget. Do this even if they show as Not Connected.

Once they're forgotten, open the Nothing X app and start the add process from scratch. The app will scan for the buds and walk you through the pairing confirmation.

Factory Reset the Nothing Ear (3)

If the software tricks don't work, clear the buds' internal memory with a full reset. Place both buds securely in the charging case and leave the lid open. Press and hold the button on the front of the case for 10 seconds. The status light will flash red, then release the button.

The red flash means the reset worked. The buds will automatically re-enter pairing mode with a clean state, ready to connect to your phone as if they were brand new.

Pair One Earbud at a Time

A stereo handshake can sometimes freeze if the left and right buds are trying to sync with each other and the phone simultaneously. Take the right bud out of the case and close the lid. Open your phone's Bluetooth settings and look for it. Pair that single bud first.

Once the right bud connects, drop it back in the case. Take out the left bud and let it sync. After both have connected individually, they will remember the stereo pair the next time you open the case together.

Test Pairing on a Second Phone

Try pairing the Nothing Ear (3) to a different phone. If they connect quickly on another device, the problem is specific to your original phone's Bluetooth configuration or the Nothing X app installation. If they refuse to pair with any phone at all, the buds themselves may have a hardware issue, or the case battery is too low to maintain a steady pairing broadcast.

Note that LDAC and LHDC 5.0 codecs require an Android phone to work. The buds will still pair with an iPhone, but they will stick to AAC or SBC. That's expected behavior, not a connection bug.

Known iOS 18.4+ App Crash

A common snag with the Nothing Ear (3) right now involves the Nothing X app crashing immediately on iOS 18.4 and later. Apple hasn't changed anything on their side yet, so Nothing is responsible for the app update. If you're on this iOS version, check the App Store for a pending update to the Nothing X app as your very first step.

Without the app up and running, you can still pair the buds as basic Bluetooth headsets, but you lose access to ANC, EQ adjustments, and the Personal Sound Profile. The workaround is to pair them manually in iOS Settings > Bluetooth and wait for the app to update.

Check the Ear Tip Seal and Case Lid

The in-ear detection sensor can get confused if the buds are sitting loosely in the case or aren't seated properly on the charging contacts. If the case battery is drained by a bad connection, the buds won't stay awake long enough to complete pairing. Wipe the charging contacts on both the buds and the case with a dry cloth.

The weak case lid magnet is a known long-term issue on the Ear (3). If the lid isn't closing fully, the buds may keep waking up and draining the case battery, then going back to sleep before you can pair them.
