Samsung's most expensive phones need a privacy screen the most. They won't get one. Tipster Ice Universe, who has a strong track record on Samsung leaks, says the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Z Fold 8 Ultra, and Z Flip 8 will all ship without the privacy display that debuted on the Galaxy S26 Ultra. The response came via X after a Korean user asked whether the Fold 8 would carry the feature.
"The Fold 8, Fold 8 Ultra, and Flip 8 do not have privacy screens," Ice Universe wrote. The omission stings because Samsung's privacy display is the S26 Ultra's standout hardware feature.
It works through a filter layer embedded in the panel that acts like tiny vertical blinds, physically blocking light from traveling sideways. The filter adjusts from a hazy effect to full blackout and can be localized to protect specific on-screen elements like a PIN entry or notification.
It is also the kind of feature that should be a natural fit for foldable phones. The Z Fold 8 Wide introduces a new 4:3 aspect ratio for Samsung's foldable lineup, and both it and the Ultra model offer tablet-size screens.
Those are precisely the kind of large displays where shoulder-surfing becomes a real problem in crowded spaces.
Samsung confirmed the Fold 8 series through regulatory filings this week, clearing the path for a launch at its summer event on July 22 in London. The lineup splits into two models this year: the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, a taller, narrower design focused on portability, and the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide, a broader passport-style form factor built for multitasking.
Both will run on the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset. The Ultra is expected to carry a 200MP camera. The Wide packs a 4,800 mAh battery with 45W wired charging.
Neither will have the privacy layer. The pricing gap makes the exclusion harder to ignore. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 launched at $1,999.99 in the US before recent price increases.
The Galaxy S26 Ultra starts at $1,299. Paying roughly $700 more for a phone that lacks one of Samsung's most genuinely useful hardware innovations is a tough sell, especially when the larger foldable screens are the ones that need it most.
