Your Orbi RBE973S says it's connected but no devices have internet. The app shows the router as online but websites time out. This is fixable in a few minutes if you start in the right place.
Power cycle the modem then the Orbi. Unplug your modem from the wall. Unplug the main Orbi router from the wall. Wait 60 seconds with both unplugged. Plug the modem in first and wait until its lights settle (usually 2 to 3 minutes). Then plug the Orbi router in and wait another 90 seconds. Check if you have internet again. This sequence forces the modem to reauthenticate with the ISP and the Orbi to grab a fresh WAN IP.
If that didn't do it, here's what's actually going on and how to walk through the rest.
Check Your ISP First
Before touching the Orbi, rule out an outage. Turn off Wi‑Fi on your phone and use cellular data to visit your ISP's status page or Downdetector. If your ISP is having a regional problem, no amount of router fixing will help. A meaningful share of "router is broken" cases are ISP issues you don't know about.
Open the Orbi App and Check Gateway Status
If the ISP is fine, open the Orbi app on your phone. Tap your network at the top. If the gateway tile shows red or amber, that's the problem. Tap it for diagnostic details. Common messages include "No internet connection" (modem cable to Orbi is loose), "WAN authentication failed" (modem isn't passing traffic), or "Internal error" (firmware glitch).
The app's built-in fix steps usually resolve gateway-tile alerts in one or two taps. You can also use the full web UI at orbilogin.com for more detailed status.
Power Cycle Modem First, Then Orbi
Order matters. Unplug the modem and wait 60 seconds. Plug the modem in alone first. Watch its lights until the link/online light is solid (usually 2 to 3 minutes). Only then unplug and re‑plug the main Orbi router. The Orbi needs a fully online modem before it can negotiate the WAN handshake.
If you reverse the order, the Orbi comes up before the modem and may cache a "no WAN" state for several minutes after the modem comes online.
Verify the WAN Cable and Port
The RBE973S router has a dedicated 10GbE WAN port and a 10GbE LAN port, plus four 2.5GbE LAN ports. If your modem is 1 GbE only, the cable between them needs to be Cat 5e or better. A worn or damaged Cat 5 cable can cause negotiation failures where the link comes up but doesn't pass traffic.
Swap the WAN cable for a known‑good Cat 6 cable. The Orbi will renegotiate within 30 seconds. If you have a multi‑gig internet plan, you definitely need Cat 6 minimum. Also double‑check that the cable is plugged into the correct WAN port, it's labeled clearly on the back.
Reset DNS Settings in the Orbi App
If devices say "connected, no internet" but websites won't load, DNS is the issue. Open the Orbi app, tap Settings, then Internet Setup, then DNS. Switch to Use These DNS Servers and enter 1.1.1.1 (Cloudflare) and 8.8.8.8 (Google). Save. Devices reconnect and DNS is forced to public servers, bypassing whatever broken DNS the Orbi was using.
The same setting is also available in the web UI at orbilogin.com under Advanced > Setup > Internet Setup.
Disable WPA3 for Incompatible Clients
The RBE973S ships with WPA2/WPA3 transitional (mixed mode) as the default. WPA3 is not enabled by default. If you manually switched to WPA3‑only in the Orbi app or web UI, some older clients can pair but fail to pass traffic, showing as "connected, no internet." Open the Orbi app, tap Security or Wi‑Fi Settings, and set security mode back to WPA2/WPA3 Transitional. Affected clients regain connectivity immediately.
Check for a Stalled Firmware Update
Firmware updates are delivered through the Orbi app or orbilogin.com. Open the Orbi app, tap Settings, then Firmware Update. If it shows "Updating" for more than 2 hours, the update is stalled. Power‑cycle the main Orbi router (unplug, 60 seconds, replug). The update either resumes and completes or fails cleanly so it can retry. Don't unplug satellites during this; only the main router. You can also force a firmware check via the web UI at orbilogin.com under Advanced > Administration > Firmware Update.
Restart Each Orbi Satellite Individually
The RBE973S system uses a dedicated 6 GHz Enhanced Backhaul for satellite links, and each satellite connects directly to the main router, daisy‑chaining satellites is not supported. If only some devices have internet, restart each satellite one at a time. Unplug the satellite, wait 30 seconds, plug it back in, wait 90 seconds for it to rejoin the mesh. Sometimes the backhaul gets confused with multiple nodes and a per‑node restart resolves it.
Disable the QoS Engine Temporarily
A known issue on the RBE973S: the QoS engine can slow speeds if Smart Connect is misconfigured, and in some cases it can block traffic entirely. Open the Orbi app, tap Settings, then Quality of Service (QoS). Turn it off. Save and test your internet. If that fixes the issue, you can re‑enable QoS later with default settings, or leave it off if you don't need traffic prioritization.
Factory Reset the RBE973S (Last Resort)
If everything else failed, factory reset the main router. With the router powered on, use a paperclip to press and hold the reset button on the back for 10 seconds until the LED flashes amber. Reset only the main router, not the satellites, they will rejoin the new mesh once the router is reconfigured. Plan 20 minutes and have your ISP credentials handy. After the reset, set up the network again through the Orbi app or orbilogin.com.
