When the fingerprint scanner on your Motorola Razr Plus (2024) stops responding, it locks you out of the quickest way to unlock your phone. The sensor is built into the power button on the side, and issues can pop up from software quirks to simple grime. Let's get it working again.

Clean the Power Button Sensor

Start with the most obvious fix. The fingerprint sensor is part of the power button, so any dirt, oil, or lotion on your finger or the button itself can block the scan. Take a soft, lint-free cloth and gently wipe the entire side button area.

Make sure your finger is clean and dry, too. I've found that even a little hand sanitizer residue can cause the sensor to fail until it's completely evaporated.

Restart Your Razr Plus

A quick reboot clears out temporary software glitches that can confuse the biometric system. Just press and hold the power button until you see the power off menu, then tap "Restart."

If the screen is unresponsive, you can force a restart. Press and hold the power button for 10 to 15 seconds until the screen goes black and the Motorola logo reappears.

Re-register Your Fingerprint

If the sensor is reading but not recognizing you, delete the old print and set it up fresh. Open the Settings app and go to Security & privacy > Device unlock > Fingerprint.

You'll need to enter your PIN, pattern, or password. Tap the fingerprint you're having trouble with and select "Remove." Now, tap "Add fingerprint" and follow the prompts, making sure to roll your finger to capture the edges as instructed.

Check for Software Updates

Motorola releases updates that can fix bugs affecting hardware like the fingerprint sensor. Go to Settings > System > System updates to check for and install any available updates.

It's a good idea to plug your phone in and connect to Wi-Fi before starting an update. After it installs and your phone restarts, test the scanner again.

Review Your Screen Protector

The Razr Plus has a unique folding screen, and not all protectors play nice with the side-mounted sensor. If you recently applied a new screen protector or case that wraps around the buttons, it might be interfering.

Try removing the case temporarily to see if the fingerprint reader improves. Some thick protectors can slightly alter how your finger presses against the power button, messing with the scan.

Boot Into Safe Mode

This checks if a recently downloaded app is causing the conflict. Press and hold the power button until the "Power off" icon appears on screen. Then, press and hold the "Power off" text until you see a prompt to reboot to Safe Mode. Tap "OK."

In Safe Mode, all third-party apps are disabled. If the fingerprint sensor works perfectly here, a downloaded app is likely the culprit. You'll need to restart normally and uninstall apps one by one to find the offender.

Clear the System Cache Partition

This clears temporary system files without touching your personal data. First, power your phone off completely. Then, press and hold the Volume Down button and the Power button at the same time.

When the Motorola logo appears, release the Power button but keep holding Volume Down. Use the volume buttons to navigate to "Recovery mode" and select it with the power button. You'll see an Android robot with "No command."

Hold the power button, tap volume up once, then release the power button. Use the volume keys to highlight "Wipe cache partition" and select it with the power button. Confirm, then select "Reboot system now."

Check for Physical Damage or Moisture

The folding design means the power button area can be vulnerable. Inspect the button for any physical damage or if it feels loose. Also, consider if the phone has been exposed to moisture, which can temporarily disrupt the capacitive sensor.

If you suspect liquid exposure, power the phone down and let it dry thoroughly in a warm, dry place for at least 24 hours before trying the sensor again. Don't use heat sources like a hair dryer directly on it.

Reset Your Device Unlock Preferences

As a last resort before more drastic measures, you can reset all biometrics. Go to Settings > Security & privacy > Device unlock. You might see an option like "Reset device unlock" or you can manually remove all fingerprints and face data.

After resetting, set up your primary fingerprint again. Sometimes, the underlying security framework needs a fresh start to function properly.
