When your LG Smart TV's apps freeze on the loading screen, crash back to webOS, or just refuse to open, it stops your streaming dead in its tracks. Whether it's Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video, or Disney+, the frustration is universal, but the fixes are usually straightforward.

I'd start by checking if your TV is in the correct operating mode. Press the Settings button on your Magic Remote, then navigate to All Settings > General > System > Home/Store Mode. Make sure it's set to "Home Mode." Store Mode can sometimes limit app functionality or cause network issues.

Restart the Problem App

First, try closing the app completely. Press the Home button on your Magic Remote to exit to the LG Home Screen. Highlight the problematic app, press the up arrow on the scroll wheel, and select the "X" to close it if the option appears. Then, simply launch the app again. This clears any temporary glitch that's hanging up the loading process.

Perform a Power Cycle on Your TV

This is the single most effective step for most webOS issues. Unplug the power cord from the back of your TV, not just from the wall outlet. Wait a full 60 seconds. This drain period clears the TV's memory and resets all its internal processes. Plug it back in and turn it on. Try your apps again.

Check Your Internet Connection Thoroughly

Streaming apps are entirely dependent on a stable network. From the Home Screen, try opening a different app or the built-in web browser to see if it connects. If other apps also fail, the issue is likely your Wi-Fi or router.

You can run a network test directly on the TV. Go to All Settings > Network > Wi-Fi Connection (or Wired if using Ethernet) and select "Test Connection." For smooth HD streaming, you generally want a speed of at least 10-15 Mbps.

Update the App from the LG Content Store

Outdated apps can break as services update their back-end systems. Press the Home button, navigate to the LG Content Store, and find the "My Apps" section. Look for any available updates for your streaming apps and install them. An update often resolves loading bugs introduced in older versions.

Clear the App's Cache and Data

Corrupted cached files can prevent an app from launching. The process is a bit hidden on webOS. Go to All Settings > General > Storage > Internal Storage. Here, you'll see a list of apps.

Select the problematic app. You'll see options for "Clear Cache" and "Clear Data." Start with "Clear Cache." If the app still won't load, you can try "Clear Data," but be aware this will erase your login information and any app-specific settings, so you'll have to sign back in.

Check for a webOS Software Update

An outdated TV operating system can cause conflicts with newer apps. LG regularly releases updates to fix bugs and improve stability. Go to All Settings > General > About This TV > Check for Updates.

Install any available update. Your TV will restart during this process. After it boots up, check if your apps are loading properly.

Uninstall and Reinstall the App

If clearing data didn't help, a fresh install is the next logical step. From the Home Screen, highlight the app's icon. Press the up arrow on the remote's scroll wheel and select the trash can icon to delete it.

Then, open the LG Content Store, search for the app, and download it again. This gives you a completely clean slate, removing any deeply corrupted files the clear function might have missed.

Verify the Streaming Service Status

Sometimes, the problem isn't on your end at all. If a specific service like Netflix or Hulu is down globally, no amount of TV troubleshooting will work. Keep a tab open on your phone to a site like Downdetector.com, or check the service's official Twitter/X account for outage reports.

Free Up Internal TV Storage

webOS TVs, especially older models, have limited internal storage. If it's nearly full, apps can struggle to update or cache data. Go to All Settings > General > Storage > Internal Storage to see how much space is free.

Consider removing apps you never use. Also, check the "Photo & Video" app, as screenshots or downloaded files can take up space. Deleting unused items can give your essential apps the room they need to run.

Reset Your LG Smart TV

If multiple apps are failing and nothing else has worked, a reset may be necessary. You have two options. A "Reset to Initial Settings" keeps your installed apps but erases all your preferences and logins.

The more thorough option is a full factory reset. You can find this under All Settings > General > System > Reset to Factory Defaults. This will wipe everything and return the TV to its out-of-the-box state, requiring a complete setup.

As a less drastic alternative, if you have an LG account, signing out and back in can sometimes refresh the TV's connection to LG's servers, which can help with app store or account-related loading issues.
