When your ThinkPad T14 won't connect to WiFi, it feels like you're cut off from the world. Whether you're seeing the dreaded red X over the network icon, you're connected but have no internet, or the signal keeps dropping, these steps will get you back online.

Run the Windows Network Troubleshooter

This is the quickest first step. Right-click the WiFi icon in your system tray and select Troubleshoot problems. Windows will automatically scan for and try to fix common connectivity glitches. On Windows 11, you can also navigate to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters and run the Network and Internet troubleshooter from there.

Toggle the WiFi Radio On and Off

Click the network icon in the taskbar and use the toggle to turn WiFi off. Wait about ten seconds, then flip it back on. This simple action refreshes your ThinkPad's wireless adapter. You can also press Fn + F8 (or the key with the radio tower icon) to toggle airplane mode, which does the same thing.

Forget and Re-add Your Network

Corrupted network profiles are a surprisingly common culprit. Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Wi-Fi > Manage known networks. Find your home or office network in the list and click Forget. Then, scan for available networks again, select yours, and re-enter the password to create a fresh connection.

Update Your WiFi Driver via Lenovo Vantage

For ThinkPads, I'd start with Lenovo Vantage for driver updates. Open the Vantage app, check for updates in the System Update section, and install any available network or wireless LAN drivers. If you don't have Vantage, you can press Windows + X, open Device Manager, expand Network adapters, right-click your Intel or Realtek wireless adapter, and select Update driver > Search automatically for drivers.

Perform a Full Restart

Don't just put it to sleep. Click Start > Power > Restart. A full reboot clears out the network stack and reloads all drivers from scratch. Many transient WiFi issues on the T14 are resolved by this basic step.

Disable and Re-enable the Network Adapter

If a restart seems like overkill, you can refresh the adapter directly. In Device Manager under Network adapters, right-click your WiFi adapter and select Disable device. Wait a moment, then right-click it again and choose Enable device. This forces the hardware to reinitialize without a full system reboot.

Reset Your Network Stack

Open Command Prompt as an administrator. Type the following commands one at a time, pressing Enter after each: netsh winsock reset, netsh int ip reset, ipconfig /flushdns, ipconfig /release, and ipconfig /renew. After running them all, restart your laptop. This clears out any corrupted network configuration data.

Check for BIOS and Windows Updates

Outdated system firmware can affect hardware performance. Check for BIOS updates through Lenovo Vantage or the Lenovo Support website. Also, go to Settings > Windows Update and install all available updates. Microsoft frequently patches network-related issues in cumulative updates.

Inspect Your Router and Network

If other devices in your home are also offline, the problem is with your network. Try restarting your router and modem by unplugging them for 30 seconds. You can also test your ThinkPad's WiFi hardware by trying to connect to a different network, like a mobile phone hotspot.

Perform a Network Reset

This is a more comprehensive step. Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Advanced network settings > Network reset. Click Reset now. This will remove and reinstall all network adapters and set every networking component back to its default state. You will need to re-enter all your WiFi passwords afterward.
