Seeing a completely black screen on your iPhone SE 4 can be a real scare, but it's often a temporary glitch rather than a permanent failure. The phone might have crashed or the display could be unresponsive while the system is still running in the background. I'd start with the simplest fixes first, as they often do the trick.

Force Restart Your iPhone SE 4

This is almost always my first step. The process for the SE 4 is quick. Press and release the Volume Up button, then immediately press and release the Volume Down button. Finally, press and hold the Side button.

Keep holding that Side button even if the screen stays dark for 10 to 15 seconds. You should see the Apple logo appear when the restart sequence begins. This works even if the touchscreen is completely frozen.

Charge It with the Right Gear

A totally drained battery will show nothing but a black screen. Since the iPhone SE 4 uses USB-C, grab a USB-C to USB-C cable and plug it into a 20W or higher USB-C Power Delivery (PD) charger for the fastest results.

Let it charge undisturbed for at least 30 minutes. If the battery was completely dead, it can take several minutes before any charging indicator appears on the screen. If you see nothing after half an hour, try a different cable and power adapter to rule out a faulty accessory.

You can also use a MagSafe or Qi2 wireless charger. Place it centered on the back of the phone and listen for the charging chime or feel for a vibration to confirm it's working, even if the screen is off.

Check for a Display or Physical Damage

Take a close look at the screen under good light. Look for any new cracks, dark spots, or discolored areas that weren't there before. Even a small impact can damage the display internally.

Try to see if the phone itself is still on. Ask "Hey Siri" a question, or have someone call it. If it vibrates, rings, or Siri responds, the phone is functioning but the display hardware has likely failed. This would require a screen replacement.

Adjust the Screen Brightness

It sounds too simple, but sometimes the brightness gets turned all the way down. If you think the phone is on, try asking Siri to "turn up the brightness."

You can also try swiping down from the top-right corner to open Control Center, then dragging the brightness slider up with your finger. An auto-brightness sensor glitch can sometimes make the screen seem completely black.

Restore Using a Computer

If a force restart doesn't work, you'll need to connect to a Mac or PC. Use a USB-C cable to plug your iPhone SE 4 into the computer. Open Finder on a Mac (with macOS Catalina or later) or iTunes on a Windows PC.

If the computer recognizes the phone, it will give you options. Always click Update first. This reinstalls iOS 18 without erasing your personal data. If the update fails or isn't available, then you may need to use Restore, which will erase everything and install a fresh copy of the operating system.

Put It Into Recovery Mode

Your computer might not see the phone in a normal state. To force it into recovery mode, first connect the USB-C cable to your computer. Then, quickly press and release the Volume Up button, press and release the Volume Down button, and then immediately press and hold the Side button.

Keep holding the Side button even after you see the Apple logo. Continue holding until you see the recovery mode screen, which shows a cable pointing to a computer icon. Your Finder or iTunes window will then prompt you to Update or Restore.

Try DFU Mode for a Deep Restore

DFU (Device Firmware Update) mode is the most thorough software restore you can do. It's a bit more precise. Connect your iPhone SE 4 to your computer with the USB-C cable.

Quickly press and release the Volume Up button, then press and release the Volume Down button. Now, press and hold the Side button for 10 seconds. After 10 seconds, while still holding the Side button, also press and hold the Volume Down button for 5 seconds.

After those 5 seconds, release the Side button but keep holding the Volume Down button for another 10 seconds. If done correctly, the screen will remain completely black. Your computer should detect the phone and prompt you to restore it.

Look for Signs of Liquid Exposure

If the black screen happened after your phone got wet, moisture may have reached the internal display connector. You should power the phone off immediately if you can and let it dry thoroughly for at least 48 hours in a dry, ventilated area.

Avoid using a hair dryer or putting it in a bag of rice, as rice dust and starch can get inside and cause more problems. If the screen doesn't come back after it's completely dry, the liquid contact indicators inside the phone may have been triggered, indicating a repair is needed.
