When your iPhone 17 Pro's fingerprint scanner stops responding, it locks you out of more than just your home screen. You can't approve Apple Pay purchases, access password managers, or open secure apps. I'd start with the quick fix that resolves this for most people.

First, give the sensor area a good clean. The under-display scanner on the iPhone 17 Pro is incredibly sensitive to oils, lotion, or any moisture on your fingertip or the screen itself. Use a soft, lint-free cloth to wipe both your finger and the entire lower portion of the display.

Restart Your iPhone 17 Pro

A simple force restart clears out temporary software glitches that can confuse the biometric system. On the iPhone 17 Pro, you press and quickly release the Volume Up button, then quickly press and release the Volume Down button. Finally, press and hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo appear, then let go.

This takes about 30 seconds and doesn't delete any data. It's often the fastest way to get the Touch ID sensor working again if it just froze up.

Re-register Your Fingerprint

If a restart doesn't help, the next step is to delete and re-add your fingerprint. Go to Settings > Touch ID & Passcode. You'll need to enter your passcode to proceed.

Tap on the fingerprint that's giving you trouble and select Delete Fingerprint. Now, tap Add a Fingerprint and follow the on-screen prompts. Make sure you rotate your finger slightly with each tap to capture the edges, just like the animation shows.

Check for a Software Update

Outdated iOS software can have bugs that affect system components like the fingerprint sensor. Head to Settings > General > Software Update.

If an update for iOS 26 is available, install it. It's a good idea to plug your phone into power using your USB-C cable and Apple's 40W Dynamic Power Adapter during the update process to ensure it completes smoothly.

Inspect Your Screen Protector

This is a very common culprit. Not all screen protectors are fully compatible with the ultrasonic fingerprint sensor in the iPhone 17 Pro. If you recently applied a new protector or case, it might be the issue.

Try temporarily removing the screen protector to see if fingerprint recognition improves. If it does, you'll need to look for a protector specifically marketed as "Touch ID compatible" or "Designed for iPhone 17 Pro." Cheap, thick glass can disrupt the sensor's signals.

Try a Different Finger or Position

Our fingerprints can change slightly due to dry skin, minor cuts, or even seasonal weather. If your primary finger isn't working, try registering and using a different one, like your other thumb or index finger.

Also, pay attention to how you're placing your finger. Are you pressing too hard or at a steep angle? Use the pad of your finger and apply a firm, even pressure directly on the indicated sensor area on the screen.

Disable Attention-Aware Features

There's a setting that can sometimes interfere. Go to Settings > Face ID & Attention. Look for the setting called "Require Attention for Touch ID."

Try turning this off. This feature is designed to ensure you're consciously using Touch ID, but in some lighting conditions or if you're wearing certain glasses, it can cause unnecessary failures.

Reset All Settings

This is a more significant step, but it won't erase your personal data like photos or messages. It will reset all your system settings, Wi-Fi passwords, wallpaper, display brightness, and privacy permissions, back to default.

Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset. Then choose Reset All Settings. You'll need to re-enter your Wi-Fi passwords and reconfigure some preferences, but it can clear out a deeper software conflict affecting Touch ID.

Check for Physical Damage

Look very closely at the lower part of your iPhone 17 Pro's screen. Do you see any new cracks, even hairline ones, directly over the area where the fingerprint icon appears? Significant damage to the display can physically break the ultrasonic sensor array beneath it.

Also, check if the issue only happens when your phone is very warm, such as during a 60W fast charge or intensive gaming. Extreme heat can temporarily affect sensor performance.

Ensure a Clean Software Restore

If you're still stuck, the final software step is to restore your iPhone using a computer. Connect your iPhone 17 Pro to your Mac or PC with its USB-C cable. Open Finder (on Mac) or iTunes (on Windows), select your device, and choose "Restore iPhone."

This will install a clean, fresh copy of iOS 26. You can then set up the phone as new to test if Touch ID works. If it does, the problem was with your previous software installation. You can then choose to restore your data from a backup, though be aware the issue could return if the backup was corrupted.
