So your iPhone 16 Pro won't charge. You plug it in and nothing happens, or maybe it just sits there stuck at a low percentage. It's a frustrating spot to be in, but I've found this is almost always something you can fix yourself without a trip to the store.
Whether the USB-C port seems dead, your MagSafe charger isn't snapping to life, or the phone shows zero signs of power, we'll walk through the fixes. Let's start with the quickest solutions first.
Force Restart Your iPhone 16 Pro
This should always be your first move. A simple force restart clears out any minor software glitches that might be interfering with the charging system. It takes about 20 seconds and works more often than you'd think.
For the iPhone 16 Pro, the sequence is: press and quickly release the Volume Up button, press and quickly release the Volume Down button, then press and hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo appear on screen.
Once it boots back up, try plugging it in again. If you see the charging indicator now, you've solved it.
Inspect and Clean the USB-C Port
This is the single most common culprit for any iPhone with a USB-C port, including your 16 Pro. Lint, dust, and pocket debris get compacted in there over time, preventing the cable from making a solid connection.
Grab a bright light and look closely into the port. If you see any dark clumps or debris, you'll need to clean it out. First, power off your phone for safety.
Then, use a wooden or plastic toothpick to gently scrape around the sides and bottom of the port. Avoid metal tools like paperclips, as they can damage the delicate gold contacts. A quick blast of compressed air can help loosen things, too.
Test a Different Cable and Power Source
You need to isolate the problem. Is it the cable, the wall adapter, or the phone itself? The best way is to swap each component one by one.
Try a different USB-C cable first, ideally one that's Apple-certified. Then, try a different wall adapter or plug it into a computer's USB-C port. Don't forget to test a different wall outlet, too.
Also, take your iPhone out of its case. Some thicker cases, or ones with misaligned cutouts, can prevent the USB-C plug from seating fully.
Check Your Battery Charging Settings
If your iPhone 16 Pro is charging but seems to stop at 80%, this is almost certainly a feature, not a bug. Apple includes settings to limit charging to preserve long-term battery health.
Go to Settings > Battery > Charging. Here, you'll find the Charge Limit option. If it's set to 80% or 85%, your phone is doing exactly what you told it to. You can adjust it to 100% for a full charge anytime.
There's also Optimized Battery Charging, which learns your routine and delays charging past 80% until you need it. I'd recommend leaving this on, as it really does help your battery last longer.
Let It Sit If the Battery Is Fully Drained
When an iPhone battery hits absolute zero, it won't show any sign of life immediately when plugged in. This is normal behavior. You need to give it a little time to wake up.
Connect it to a wall charger using a good cable and adapter, then leave it alone for at least 15 to 30 minutes. Avoid using a low-power source like a computer USB port for this initial wake-up.
After that time, check for a charging icon on the screen. If there's still nothing, try a force restart while it remains plugged into the wall.
Try MagSafe or Qi2 Wireless Charging
This is a great diagnostic step. If your iPhone 16 Pro charges wirelessly but not via the USB-C port, you've likely isolated the problem to the physical port itself.
Make sure you're using a MagSafe or Qi2-certified charger for the fastest speeds, up to an estimated 25W. Align the magnets so they snap into place, and remove any case that's overly thick or has metal plates inside.
Keep in mind that wireless charging generates more heat. If your phone gets warm, it may slow down or pause charging temporarily to protect the battery. This is normal.
Update to the Latest Version of iOS
Software bugs can occasionally interfere with charging management. Apple typically patches these issues in point updates. Since your iPhone 16 Pro runs iOS 26, make sure you're on the latest available version.
Go to Settings > General > Software Update. If an update is waiting, download and install it. It's a good idea to plug your phone in while updating.
If your phone won't turn on to check for an update, you can update it via a computer. Connect it to a Mac or PC and use Finder or iTunes to check for and install any available updates.
Charge with the Phone Powered Off
Sometimes a background app or process is causing enough battery drain to offset the incoming charge, making it seem like the phone isn't charging. Turning the iPhone completely off eliminates all that activity.
Power down your iPhone 16 Pro, then plug it into your charger. If it begins charging normally, you know the issue is software-related, happening within the operating system.
Charging while the phone is off is also the absolute fastest way to get a boost, as no power is being used for the screen or apps.
Restore Your iPhone Using a Computer
If you've tried every other step and the problem persists, a deeper software issue might be at play. A full restore via Recovery Mode can wipe this out. Remember, this will erase all data on your phone, so ensure you have a recent backup in iCloud or on your computer first.
To enter Recovery Mode on an iPhone 16 Pro, turn it off. Connect it to your computer with a USB-C cable. Then, press and hold the Side button and the Volume Down button together for about 20 seconds until you see the recovery mode screen on your iPhone.
On your computer, you'll be given the option to Update or Restore. Choose Restore. This will install a fresh, clean copy of iOS. After it finishes, set up your phone and test the charging immediately.
