If your iPhone 14's fingerprint scanner isn't working, you're probably feeling a bit stuck. It's a common snag that can lock you out of your phone or your secure apps. Let's walk through the steps to get it working again.

Check Your Fingerprint Setup

First, make sure your fingerprint is properly registered in the system. Head to Settings > Face ID & Passcode. You'll need to enter your passcode to get in.

Scroll down to the "Fingerprints" section. If you don't see this option, it means Touch ID isn't set up on your device. You'll need to add your fingerprint from here.

Tap "Add a Fingerprint" and follow the on-screen prompts. Place your finger on the Home button, lift it, and adjust slightly until the scan is complete. I'd recommend registering the same finger twice for better accuracy.

Clean the Home Button and Your Finger

This is the most common fix. The Touch ID sensor on the Home button needs a clean, dry surface. Any lotion, grease, sweat, or dirt on your finger or the button itself can block the scan.

Wipe your finger on your pants or a clean cloth. Then, take a soft, lint-free cloth and gently clean the circular Home button. Avoid using any liquids or cleaners, as they can damage the sensor.

If you have a case or a thick screen protector that covers the Home button rim, it might be interfering. Try removing it temporarily to see if that solves the problem.

Restart Your iPhone 14

A simple restart can clear out temporary software glitches that might be confusing the Touch ID system. To restart your iPhone 14, press and hold the Side button and either Volume button until the power slider appears.

Drag the slider to turn it off. Wait about 30 seconds, then press and hold the Side button again until you see the Apple logo. Once it boots back up, try your fingerprint again.

Remove and Re-add Your Fingerprint

If the sensor still isn't recognizing you, the stored print data might have gotten corrupted. Go back to Settings > Face ID & Passcode and enter your passcode.

Tap on the fingerprint you're having trouble with. You'll see an option to delete it. Go ahead and remove it, then immediately tap "Add a Fingerprint" to scan it again from scratch.

When you re-scan, make sure to cover the edges of your fingertip by rolling it slightly, as the system prompts you. This creates a more complete map for the sensor to use.

Update Your iPhone's Software

Outdated iOS software can sometimes cause biometric features to act up. Apple has released updates in the past to fix Touch ID performance. To check, go to Settings > General > Software Update.

If an update is available, tap "Download and Install." Make sure your iPhone 14 is connected to Wi-Fi and has at least 50% battery, or is plugged into its Lightning charger. After the update installs, test your fingerprint.

Check for Moisture or Damage

The iPhone 14's Lightning port is known to be susceptible to corrosion from moisture. While this mainly affects charging, significant liquid exposure could potentially impact other components.

If your phone has been exposed to liquid, make sure it's completely dry. Also, inspect the Home button area for any physical damage, cracks, or deep scratches that could be obstructing the sensor.

Reset All Settings

This is a more involved step, but it won't delete your personal data like photos or messages. It resets all your system settings, Wi-Fi passwords, wallpaper, and privacy permissions, back to default, which can clear out a misconfigured setting affecting Touch ID.

Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone. Tap "Reset" and then choose "Reset All Settings." You'll need to enter your passcode and confirm. After your phone restarts, you'll need to re-enable Touch ID in the Face ID & Passcode settings.
