When your Infinix Note 40 Pro's Settings app keeps crashing or freezing, it can lock you out of managing your phone. This is often a temporary software hiccup, especially with XOS 14's layered interface. The good news is you can usually fix it without losing any data.

Force Restart Your Phone

This is the quickest fix and should be your first move. A force restart clears the phone's temporary memory and stops any process that's causing the Settings app to misbehave. It's different from a normal restart and works even if the screen is frozen.

Just press and hold the Power button and the Volume Down button together for about 10 seconds. Keep holding until you see the Infinix logo appear, then let go. Your phone will boot up fresh. Check if you can open Settings normally now.

Clear the Settings App Cache and Data

If a restart didn't help, the next step is to clear the Settings app's stored files. Cache data helps the app load faster, but it can become corrupted. Clearing it forces the app to rebuild this data from scratch.

Since you can't open the main Settings app, you'll need to access it through the Android application manager. Swipe down from the top of your screen to open the notification panel, then tap the gear icon in the top-right corner. If that crashes, go to your app drawer and find the "Settings" app icon. Long-press on it and tap the "i" or "App info" button that pops up.

This will take you directly to the Settings app's info page. Tap on Storage & cache. Here, tap Clear cache first. If the problem continues, come back to this screen and tap Clear storage or Clear data. Don't worry, this won't delete your personal files or reset your whole phone, it just resets the Settings app's preferences to default.

Check for a System Update

Infinix regularly releases updates for XOS that fix bugs and improve stability. An outdated system can have conflicts that cause core apps like Settings to crash. Since you might not be able to navigate to the update section normally, try using your voice assistant.

Say "Hey Google" or press your voice assistant button, then say "Check for system updates." If that works, it should take you to the update screen. Alternatively, you can try asking the assistant to "Open system update settings." If an update is available, install it. I'd recommend using your included 70W charger to ensure the update doesn't get interrupted by a low battery.

Manage Google Play Services

Google Play Services is a background app that many system functions rely on. If it has an issue, it can cause unexpected crashes in other apps, including Settings. You can try updating or resetting it.

Open the Google Play Store app and search for "Google Play Services." If an update is available, install it. If the problem started after a recent update, you can try clearing its data. Go to Settings > Apps > See all apps, find "Google Play Services," and tap Storage & cache > Manage storage > Clear all data. This will reset it and may help.

Boot Into Safe Mode

Sometimes, a third-party app you installed can interfere with system operations. Booting into Safe Mode temporarily disables all downloaded apps, letting you see if one of them is the culprit.

To enter Safe Mode on the Infinix Note 40 Pro, press and hold the power button until the power menu appears. Then, long-press the "Power off" option on your screen. A prompt will ask if you want to reboot to Safe Mode. Tap "OK." If the Settings app works fine in Safe Mode, you know a downloaded app is causing the crash.

You'll need to restart your phone to exit Safe Mode. Then, start uninstalling recently downloaded apps one by one, checking the Settings app after each one, until you find the problematic app.

Consider a Factory Reset

If nothing else has worked and the Settings app is still unusable, a factory reset is the final software solution. This will erase everything on your phone and return it to its original out-of-the-box state, so you must back up your photos, contacts, and files first.

Since the Settings app is crashing, you may need to use the hardware key method to access the recovery menu. First, power your phone off completely. Then, press and hold the Power button and Volume Up button together. When you feel the phone vibrate, release the Power button but keep holding Volume Up until you see the recovery menu.

Use the volume buttons to navigate to "Wipe data/factory reset" and select it with the power button. Confirm your choice. After the reset is complete, select "Reboot system now." This process will take several minutes. Once set up is complete, the crashing issue should be resolved.
