When the volume buttons on your Huawei Pura 70 Pro stop responding, it can leave you scrambling to adjust calls or media. You press the rocker, but nothing happens. The good news is that most of the time, this is a software hiccup or a simple obstruction that you can fix yourself without a trip to a service center.
Before you assume the worst, work through these practical solutions. I'd start with the first few, as they resolve the majority of cases.
Remove Your Phone Case
This is always the first thing to check. Take off your phone case completely. Some cases, especially thicker or ill-fitting ones, can press against the volume rocker and prevent it from moving properly.
Inspect the case's button cutouts for any warping or debris. With the case off, test the buttons again to see if they click and respond normally.
Perform a Force Restart
A force restart is the go-to fix for any weird software glitch on the Pura 70 Pro, including unresponsive buttons. It clears the phone's temporary memory without touching your personal data.
For the Huawei Pura 70 Pro, you simply press and hold the Power button for about 10 seconds or longer. Keep holding it until you see the Huawei logo appear on the screen, then you can release it. The phone will boot up normally.
Clean the Volume Buttons
Dust, lint, and pocket debris are common culprits. Over time, they can get packed into the small gap around the volume rocker, making it feel mushy or stuck.
Use a can of compressed air to blow gently around the edges of the button. For any sticky residue, lightly dampen a cotton swab with isopropyl alcohol and carefully clean around the button, being sure not to let any liquid seep inside. Let it dry completely before testing.
Test the Buttons in Different Apps
Open a few different applications to see if the problem is universal. Try adjusting the volume while in the Music app, while watching a video on YouTube (via a browser like Huawei Browser if you don't have the app), and during a phone call.
If the buttons work in some apps but not others, the issue is likely with a specific app's settings or compatibility. This is a known consideration on EMUI 14.2, as some apps sideloaded without Google Play Services can behave unpredictably.
Check Your Sound Settings
It's worth a quick look in your settings to make sure nothing was accidentally changed. Open the Settings app and go to Sound & vibration.
Here, you can adjust the volume sliders for media, calls, and alarms. Also, play a ringtone or some music and press the volume buttons to see if the on-screen indicator moves, even if the button doesn't click.
Toggle the Mute Switch (If Applicable)
Some Huawei models have a physical mute switch or button. If your Pura 70 Pro case has one, or if you use a software mute function, toggle it on and off a few times.
This action can sometimes reset the audio subsystem and restore communication with the volume buttons. After toggling it, test the volume rocker again.
Update Your EMUI Software
Software bugs can occasionally cause hardware controls to stop responding. Huawei releases updates to fix these kinds of issues.
Connect to Wi-Fi, then go to Settings > System & updates > Software update. Tap on 'Check for updates' and install any available firmware. Your phone will restart, which alone can help clear up temporary glitches.
Use the On-Screen Volume Slider
While you're troubleshooting, you can still control your volume. Swipe down from the top right of your screen to open the Control Center.
You'll see a volume slider there that you can adjust with your finger. You can also press the physical volume button once to make the slider appear on the side of the screen, then drag it.
Boot into Safe Mode
Safe mode starts your phone with only the original system software, disabling all third-party apps you've installed. This is a great way to check if a recently downloaded app is causing the conflict.
To enter Safe Mode on the Pura 70 Pro, press and hold the Power button until the power off menu appears. Then, press and hold the "Power off" option on your screen. It will ask if you want to reboot to Safe Mode. Tap OK.
If the volume buttons work perfectly in Safe Mode, you know a third-party app is the problem. You'll need to uninstall apps one by one, starting with the most recent, to find the culprit.
Consider a Factory Reset
This is your last resort before looking at hardware repair. A factory reset will wipe your phone back to its original out-of-the-box state, eliminating any deep-seated software corruption.
Crucially, you must back up your data first. Use Huawei's built-in backup tool in Settings > System & updates > Backup & restore. Once backed up, go to System & updates > Reset > Factory data reset. Follow the prompts to erase everything.
After the reset, set up the phone as new (don't restore the backup immediately) and test the volume buttons. If they work, you can then restore your backup, though be aware the problem could return if the backup contains corrupted data.
