Getting your new Galaxy Z Flip 6 set up with all your stuff is the first step to enjoying that foldable screen. Whether you're upgrading from an older Samsung, switching from another Android brand, or making the jump from an iPhone, the process is pretty straightforward. I'd start with Samsung's own tool, as it's designed to handle the unique aspects of your new phone.

Start with Samsung Smart Switch

The absolute easiest way to move your data is using Samsung Smart Switch. You'll find it pre-installed on your Z Flip 6. When you first power on the phone, the setup wizard will prompt you to use it. If you've already skipped that, you can open it anytime by going to Settings > Accounts and backup > Bring data from old device.

You'll have three connection options: wireless, USB cable, or from an external storage device like a microSD card. For most people, the wireless method is the most convenient. Just make sure both phones are charged above 50% and connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

Connect Your Phones Wirelessly

On your Z Flip 6, open Smart Switch and tap Receive data, then select Wireless. Now, grab your old phone. If it's a Samsung, Smart Switch should already be there. If it's another Android phone, you'll need to download the "Samsung Smart Switch Mobile" app from the Google Play Store.

Open the app on your old device and tap Send data. It will search for your new Z Flip 6. Once they find each other, you can select exactly what you want to transfer. This includes contacts, messages, photos, videos, apps, and even your home screen layout. The transfer time depends on how much data you have, so just let it run.

For a Super Fast Transfer, Use a Cable

If you have a lot of photos and videos, the wireless method can take a while. For a much faster transfer, use a USB cable. You'll need a USB-C to USB-C cable to connect two modern Android phones directly.

Smart Switch provides an on-screen guide. Connect the cable to your new Z Flip 6 first, then attach the adapter (if needed) and plug it into your old phone. The app detects the cable connection automatically and switches to a high-speed mode. This is the best way to move large media libraries without draining both batteries.

Moving from an iPhone to Your Z Flip 6

Smart Switch works great for moving from an iPhone, too. On your new Samsung, open Smart Switch and select iPhone/iPad as your old device. You have two main choices: transfer directly with a cable, or pull data from an iCloud backup.

For the cable method, you'll need a Lightning to USB-C cable (the kind that comes with newer iPads). Connect your iPhone to the Z Flip 6, grant the necessary permissions on the iPhone, and select your data. If you prefer iCloud, just sign into your Apple ID within Smart Switch on the Samsung. It will let you choose a backup to restore from. Keep in mind, paid iOS apps won't transfer; you'll need to find their Android equivalents on the Play Store.

Restore from a Samsung Cloud Backup

If you're a longtime Samsung user, you might have backups in Samsung Cloud. During the initial setup of your Z Flip 6, after connecting to Wi-Fi, you'll be asked to sign into your Samsung account. Right there, you should see an option to Restore from a backup.

Select your most recent backup file. This can restore your call logs, messages, home screen layout, and settings. It's a seamless way to pick up right where you left off, especially for things like your Edge panels and custom modes.

Let Google Sync the Essentials

Don't forget about your Google account. When you sign in during setup, it automatically starts syncing your contacts, calendar events, Gmail, and Chrome bookmarks. This happens in the background.

To check what's syncing or to manually trigger a sync, go to Settings > Accounts and backup > Manage accounts. Tap on your Google account. You'll see a list of everything syncing, from Drive files to Play Games data. This is often how game progress and some app data come over.

Transferring WhatsApp Chats

WhatsApp requires a separate, but simple, process. On your old phone, open WhatsApp and go to Settings > Chats > Chat transfer. Tap Start. On your new Z Flip 6, install WhatsApp from the Play Store, verify your number, and you'll be prompted to scan a QR code displayed on your old phone.

The transfer happens over a local Wi-Fi connection created between the two phones, so your chats don't go through a server. Make sure both phones are plugged in, as this can take several minutes for large chat histories.

After Your Data is Moved

Once the transfer is complete, take a few minutes to explore your new Z Flip 6. Open your photo gallery and messaging apps to make sure everything looks right. You'll likely need to log back into banking apps, social media, and email accounts for security reasons.

Now is also a good time to set up the cover screen. Head to Settings > Advanced features > Labs to enable more apps on the outer display. When you're 100% sure all your data is safely on the new phone, you can wipe your old one. On most Android devices, you'll find the option under Settings > System > Reset options > Erase all data (factory reset).
