Taking a screenshot on your iPhone 17 Pro Max is a daily task, whether you're saving a travel itinerary, capturing a bug report, or sharing a funny meme. With iOS 26, you have more ways to do it than ever, and each method is perfect for a different situation. Once you know them all, you'll be able to grab a screenshot no matter how you're holding your phone.
Use the Button Combo
The classic method is still the fastest for most people. On your iPhone 17 Pro Max, press the Side button and the Volume Up button at the same time, then release them quickly. You'll see a quick flash and hear the camera shutter sound, unless your phone is in silent mode.
A small preview thumbnail will pop up in the bottom-left corner of your screen. You can tap on it to immediately edit, crop, or mark up the image. If you just swipe it away, the screenshot will save directly to your Photos app in the Screenshots album.
Use AssistiveTouch
If the button combo feels awkward on the larger Pro Max, or if a button isn't working, AssistiveTouch is a great software alternative. First, you need to enable it by going to Settings > Accessibility > Touch > AssistiveTouch and toggling it on.
A small, movable button will appear on your screen. Tap it, then navigate to Device > More > Screenshot. You can also customize it so that a double-tap or long press on the floating button takes a screenshot directly, which I find is much quicker.
Use Back Tap
This is one of the coolest hidden features. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Back Tap. You can then assign the screenshot action to either a Double Tap or a Triple Tap on the back of your iPhone.
It works reliably through most cases, and it's incredibly convenient when your phone is on a desk or you don't want to fumble with the buttons. Just give the back of your iPhone 17 Pro Max a couple of firm taps.
Ask Siri
When your hands are literally full, just use your voice. Say "Hey Siri, take a screenshot". Your phone will capture whatever is on the display at that moment and save it automatically to your Photos.
This works even if Siri is set to only show text responses on screen, so it's a great hands-free option while you're cooking or working on something else.
Capture a Full-Page Screenshot
Web pages, long documents, and email threads often don't fit on one screen. To capture everything, first take a normal screenshot using any method. Then, immediately tap the preview thumbnail that appears.
At the top of the editing screen, you'll see two options: Screen and Full Page. Tap Full Page to capture the entire scrollable content. It saves as a PDF file, which you can then share, annotate, or store in the Files app.
Edit and Share Immediately
The instant preview is your gateway to quick edits. Tap on it to open a robust set of markup tools. You can crop, draw with different pen styles, add text, or use a highlighter. When you're done, tap 'Done' to save or delete.
You can also tap the share icon from this preview to send the screenshot directly via AirDrop, Messages, Mail, or any other app without ever opening your Photos library. It's a huge time-saver.
Adjust Your Screenshot Preferences
To silence the shutter sound, simply flip the physical ring/silent switch on the left side of your iPhone 17 Pro Max. In silent mode, screenshots are taken quietly.
For full-page screenshots, you can choose a default save location. After capturing one, use the share sheet and select "Save to Files" to send it directly to iCloud Drive or a specific folder. This helps keep your Photos app organized and your PDFs easy to find later.
