uBlock Origin not working on YouTube has current fixes for the site switch, filter lists, extension conflicts, Chrome permissions, Chrome's Manifest V2 change, and broken installs. Start with the fastest uBO checks, then move to uBlock Origin Lite or a supported browser when Chrome is the blocker.
1. Turn uBlock Origin back on for YouTube
A gray uBlock Origin icon or dimmed power button means filtering is disabled for that site.
- 1.Open youtube.com.
- 2.Select the uBlock Origin toolbar icon.
- 3.If the large blue power button is dimmed, select power to re-enable filtering.
- 4.Select the browser Reload button and test YouTube again.
For the manual check, open the uBlock Origin dashboard, select Trusted sites, remove any youtube.com or www.youtube.com directive, then select Apply changes.
2. Refresh the full uBO filter lists
- 1.Use this for the full uBlock Origin extension, not uBlock Origin Lite.
- 2.Open the uBlock Origin dashboard and select Filter lists.
- 3.Turn on Auto update filter lists.
- 4.Select the clock icon beside outdated lists.
- 5.Select Update now.
- 6.Select the browser Reload button on YouTube.
Full uBO updates filter lists from the current Filter lists pane. Leave the default uBlock/uBO lists enabled. If you changed list selections, select Apply changes, then use Update now for outdated lists.
3. Remove extra content blockers
Run uBlock Origin or uBlock Origin Lite by itself for the test because the uBlock Origin Lite FAQ says not to run other content blockers alongside uBOL.
Chrome: Open More > Extensions > Manage extensions, turn off other ad blockers and content blockers, then open YouTube in a new tab.
Edge: Open Extensions > Manage extensions, turn off other blockers, then reload YouTube.
4. Give Chrome access to YouTube
- Normal browsing: Open More > Extensions > Manage extensions, select Details for uBlock Origin or uBlock Origin Lite, then set Allow this extension to read and change all your data on websites you visit to On all sites. You can also choose On specific sites and add youtube.com.
- Incognito: Open Details, turn on Allow in incognito, close the old Incognito window, open a new one, and reload YouTube.
- Corrupted extension: Open Manage extensions, select Repair, confirm Repair extension, and reload YouTube.
Chrome controls which sites an extension reads and changes, so set the YouTube permission directly when uBO or uBOL is installed but not acting on YouTube.
5. Replace full uBO with uBlock Origin Lite in Chrome
On Chrome 139 and newer, full uBlock Origin is not the current fix because Chrome removed Manifest V2 support.
- 1.Open the Chrome Web Store listing for uBlock Origin Lite.
- 2.Select Add to Chrome.
- 3.Confirm with Add extension.
- 4.Open youtube.com and select the uBlock Origin Lite icon.
- 5.Set YouTube filtering to Optimal. Select Complete on builds that show it.
Use uBlock Origin Lite, the Manifest V3 replacement you choose manually. To set the mode globally, open uBlock Origin Lite options or dashboard, then choose Optimal or Complete. Do not look for the full uBO Update now filter-list routine in uBO Lite; uBO Lite rulesets and scripts update when the extension updates through the browser's extension update system.
6. Run full uBlock Origin in Firefox, Edge, Opera, or Brave
- Firefox: Open the Mozilla Add-ons listing, confirm uBlock Origin by Raymond Hill, select Add to Firefox, and approve the Firefox permission prompt. The listing also covers Firefox for Android.
- Microsoft Edge: Open Microsoft Edge Add-ons, open the uBlock Origin listing, select Get, and approve the extension prompt. Already installed? Open Extensions > Manage extensions and turn the uBO toggle on.
- Opera: Open the Opera add-ons uBlock Origin listing, select the install/add button, approve the prompt, then confirm uBlock Origin is enabled in Opera's extensions manager.
- Brave: Open brave://settings/extensions/v2, then download and enable uBlock Origin from Brave's supported Manifest V2 extensions. As of Brave 1.81, Brave hosts uBO on its own backend, separate from the Chrome Web Store version, so manage it from Brave's extensions page. Brave keeps this selected Manifest V2 support best-effort.
If you want full uBlock Origin instead of uBlock Origin Lite, move YouTube to a browser with a current full uBO install path.
7. Repair or reinstall a broken extension
Broken installs belong at the end, after the site switch, filter lists, conflicts, and Chrome permissions are correct.
Chrome repair: Open More > Extensions > Manage extensions, find the corrupted extension, select Repair, confirm Repair extension, then reload YouTube.
Chrome reinstall: Right-click the extension icon, choose Remove from Chrome, select Remove, then reinstall from the official store page. You can also remove it from More > Extensions > Manage extensions > Remove.
Edge reinstall: Right-click the extension icon, choose Remove from Microsoft Edge, select Remove, then reinstall from Microsoft Edge Add-ons.
8. Check work or school rules
- Chrome admins: Set installation_mode to allowed to permit user installation. To install automatically, use force_installed or normal_installed and set update_url to https://clients2.google.com/service/update2/crx for Chrome Web Store-hosted extensions.
- Edge admins: Use Configure extension management settings or Control which extensions are installed silently under Administrative Templates > Microsoft Edge > Extensions.
Managed browsers follow admin extension policy. On Chrome, admins use ExtensionSettings to allow, force-install, or limit an extension, and runtime_allowed_hosts allows access to *://*.youtube.com.
On a work or school computer, ask IT to allow uBlock Origin or uBlock Origin Lite for YouTube. Home users should use the consumer steps above.
9. Skip old Chrome flags and purge-cache fixes
Current 2026 Chrome fixes do not rely on ExtensionManifestV2Availability, Chrome command-line flags, or temporary re-enable switches. Google's current MV2 timeline says Chrome 138 disabled MV2 extensions everywhere and Chrome 139 removes the enterprise policy.
Older uBO YouTube instructions built around Purge all caches no longer match the current full uBO filter-list path. Use Filter lists, the clock icon beside outdated lists, and Update now.
Legacy Safari uBlock Origin from old tutorials is not the right install path. Use only a current App Store-supported uBlock Origin Lite build for Safari platforms that offer it, or use Firefox, Edge, Opera, or Brave with supported full uBO paths.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is uBlock Origin Lite the same as full uBlock Origin?
No. uBlock Origin Lite is a Manifest V3 content blocker for current Chrome and Chromium browsers, and it is a reduced-functionality product compared with full uBlock Origin. Full uBO does not automatically transition to uBOL; install uBOL yourself.
Which browser is best for full uBlock Origin?
Firefox is the first pick. The official uBlock Origin release page links the Firefox AMO listing and states that uBO works best on Firefox.
Does uBlock Origin work on Firefox for Android?
Yes. The Mozilla Add-ons listing for uBlock Origin by Raymond Hill says it is available on Firefox for Android.
How does an admin force uBlock Origin to install?
Chrome admins configure ExtensionSettings with installation_mode set to force_installed and update_url set to https://clients2.google.com/service/update2/crx for Chrome Web Store-hosted extensions. normal_installed also auto-installs but lets users disable it, while allowed only permits user installation and does not force it. Edge admins use the Microsoft Edge extension policies for silent installation and extension management settings.
Why do ads still show with YouTube Premium Lite?
Premium Lite is YouTube's official lighter ad-free option, but it removes ads on many videos rather than every ad surface. YouTube lists music content, Shorts, search, and browse surfaces outside that clean no-ads coverage.
