Your Discord GIFs are blank, stuck on one frame, or missing from the picker altogether. Each symptom points to a different set of checks. Start with another GIF, then use the fixes below for what you're seeing.

Find out how much is affected

When one GIF fails, try another before changing your settings. That test separates a single broken item from a wider problem.

On desktop or in a desktop browser, select the GIF icon beside the message field.

Search for another GIF or choose one from a category.

On mobile, tap the message field.

Select the smiley icon.

Open the GIF tab.

Choose another result.

If multiple GIFs fail, check Discord Status for active incidents and affected services. During a relevant outage, retry after service recovers.

Here's the useful distinction: a visible but motionless GIF calls for animation settings. A link without a preview calls for chat settings. Blank results across multiple GIFs call for app, browser, or connection troubleshooting.

Bring back missing or hidden previews

Disabled image previews leave GIFs showing as links or attachments without an inline preview.

On desktop or in a browser, open Chat through the bottom-left cogwheel.

On mobile, open Chat through your bottom-right profile image and the top-right cogwheel.

Enable When posted as links to chat.

Turn on When uploaded directly to Discord.

Enable Show embeds and preview website links pasted into the chat.

Revisit the affected message.

If a spoiler cover hides the GIF, click or tap the covered attachment or link. Leaving the channel hides revealed spoilers again.

For media blurred by a sensitive-content filter, select the eye icon where your account permits access. Available actions depend on age and region; teens cannot disable filtering entirely.

To report an incorrect classification, right-click or long-press the media.

Select Mark as Not Sensitive.

Confirm the report.

Restore animation for frozen GIFs

For a GIF that loads but stays still, use the current Accessibility controls; older paths through Appearance or Text & Images are outdated, and preview controls now live in Chat.

  1. 1.On desktop, open User Settings > App Settings > Accessibility. On mobile, open your profile, select the settings cogwheel, then open App Settings > Accessibility.
  2. 2.Enable the GIF autoplay control. Discord calls it Automatically playing GIFs when Discord is focused in its help page; use the GIF autoplay control on mobile without relying on that exact wording.
  3. 3.On desktop, locate Reduced Motion and disable Sync with computer if Discord follows your computer's motion preference.
  4. 4.Turn off Enable Reduced Motion.
  5. 5.Keep Discord focused while testing the GIF again. These controls address suppressed animation, not an image that fails to download.

Restart Discord and install its latest fixes

For blank previews or a stuck picker, fully close desktop Discord, including remaining processes in Task Manager on Windows or Activity Monitor on Mac. Wait 30 seconds. Reopen Discord.

On a Google Pixel, use Settings > Apps > See all apps > Discord > Force stop > OK before reopening Discord; other Android manufacturers use different labels. On iPhone or iPad, force-close Discord and reopen it. Restart the device if the problem continues.

Install the current stable Discord release through Play Store > profile icon > Manage apps & devices > Updates available on Android or App Store > profile icon > App Updates on iPhone and iPad.

If the desktop client cannot update, get the current installer from Discord's download page. This matters especially for Linux GIFs freezing on their second loop and gray GIF-search placeholders on iOS: Discord addressed both in its June 2026 patch notes.

Clear the affected client's cache

This targets persistent app or browser trouble.

For the Windows or Mac app, quit Discord completely.

On Windows, clear the contents of %appdata%/discord/Cache.

On Mac, clear the contents of ~/Library/Application Support/discord/Cache.

Reopen Discord.

Test the same GIF.

On a Google Pixel, select Settings > Apps > See all apps > Discord > Storage & cache > Clear cache. Other Android devices use different menu labels.

For desktop Chrome, open More > Delete browsing data.

Set the time range to All time.

Select Cached images and files.

Leave unrelated categories unselected.

Choose Delete data.

Retry Discord.

If Chrome still has trouble, repeat the cleanup with Cookies and other site data selected too. Be ready to sign back in after deleting cookies.

Separate browser trouble from network trouble

Test the same GIF in another up-to-date desktop browser supported by Discord: Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari, or Opera. If it works there, focus on the original client's cache, extensions, or rendering. Discord does not support mobile browsers.

In desktop Chrome, use More > New Incognito Window to sign in and test Discord. If it works, return to a normal window and disable extensions under More > Extensions > Manage extensions. Retest, then re-enable extensions individually to identify the culprit.

Test the same GIF on another available network. If the failure follows your original connection, check security software rules for blocked images or animation. For trouble limited to a work or school network, ask its administrator to investigate blocked media requests.

For desktop freezing or rendering trouble, locate Hardware Acceleration in the advanced settings section of User Settings. Disable it and restart if prompted. This tests rendering trouble; it does not repair a network failure or broken GIF search.

Check uploads and channel permissions

File size limits and channel permissions block GIF uploads or embedded previews.

Check your saved GIF's size before uploading. Discord lists limits of 20 MB for free accounts, 50 MB for Nitro Basic, and up to 500 MB for Nitro, with some experiments affecting limits. Discord checks the size before compression; images above 20 MB are not guaranteed an inline preview and sometimes appear as downloads.

Choose a smaller GIF if your file exceeds the upload limit or you need an inline preview.

If the picker is broken, select + beside the message field.

Choose Upload a File.

Select a saved GIF.

Send it in the conversation. This bypasses the picker without repairing GIF search.

On desktop or in a desktop browser, open GIF > Favorites for another picker option.

Select a saved result. Adding GIF favorites is unavailable on mobile.

If posting works in one server channel but fails in another, ask a server administrator to check your permissions.

An administrator opens the channel's cogwheel > Permissions.

Select the affected role or member.

Allow Embed Links for embedded link content.

Allow Attach Files for media uploads.

Check that the role or member also has permission to send messages.

Reinstall only if the problem persists

If the mobile app still fails after the relevant checks, confirm that you can sign back in before removing Discord. Deleting the app puts local app data at risk.

Remove Discord from your device.

Reinstall it through the App Store or Google Play Store.

Test the affected GIF again.

If reinstalling fails, or the problem persists across supported desktop clients and networks, contact Discord Support through Submit a request. Include your client and OS versions, a screenshot, the affected GIF or message, reproduction steps, and your test results across clients and networks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did Tenor shutting down break all Discord GIFs?

Google retired the public Tenor API on June 30, 2026, affecting third-party integrations that used it. That retirement does not mean Discord's entire GIF picker is unavailable. Tenor.com remains available for finding GIFs, and owners of affected integrations must replace the retired API dependency.

How do I restore system animations when Discord follows my phone's settings?

On iPhone, open Settings > Accessibility > Motion and turn off Reduce Motion. On Android devices using Google's interface, open Settings > Accessibility > Color and motion and turn off Remove animations. Android menu paths vary by manufacturer. These are animation checks, not repairs for failed downloads.

Why does Discord ask me to verify my age before showing a GIF?

For UK users subject to Discord's age-assurance requirements, revealing filtered media or changing a filter to Show triggers an age-assurance prompt when verification is required. Complete Discord's in-app process to resolve the access restriction. Regional requirements differ.

Does clearing Android storage do the same thing as clearing cache?

No. Clear storage or Clear data removes local app data and requires setting up the app again. Use Clear cache first. Reserve a storage reset for trouble that persists, and confirm you can sign back in before using it.
