Copy and paste looks simple until the shortcut changes, the clipboard menu hides, or your phone decides a tap is not enough. The core move is still the same everywhere: select what you want, copy it, then paste it where it belongs.

Here are the current shortcuts and menus for Windows, Mac, iPhone, iPad, Android, Chromebook, browsers, Office apps, and accessibility tools.

1. Copy And Paste On Windows

Start here if you are on a Windows PC. These shortcuts work across Windows 11 and most apps that accept copied text, images, links, or files.

  1. 1.Select the text, file, image, or other item.
  2. 2.Press Ctrl+C to copy it.
  3. 3.Press Ctrl+X to cut it instead.
  4. 4.Click where the item should go.
  5. 5.Press Ctrl+V to paste it.

Windows also documents Ctrl+Insert for copy and Shift+Insert for paste. Use those only when they fit your keyboard better.

To paste something you copied earlier, press Windows logo key+V. If clipboard history is off, choose Turn on, or open Settings > System > Clipboard and switch Clipboard history to On.

2. Use Command Shortcuts On A Mac

  • Command-C copies the selected text or item.
  • Command-V pastes the most recently copied item.
  • Edit > Copy and Edit > Paste do the same thing from the menu bar.
  • Control-click > Copy and Control-click > Paste work from the shortcut menu.

On a Mac, the Command key does the work that Ctrl handles on Windows. If pasted text brings the wrong font or size with it, use Option-Shift-Command-V or choose Edit > Paste and Match Style.

3. Select And Paste On iPhone Or iPad

The editing menu appears after you select text on iPhone and iPad.

  1. 1.Select the text you want.
  2. 2.Tap the selection to open the editing options.
  3. 3.Tap Copy, Cut, Paste, or Select All.

Apple also supports three-finger gestures: pinch closed with three fingers to copy, pinch closed with three fingers twice to cut, and pinch open with three fingers to paste.

Using an external keyboard with iPad changes the feel completely. Press Command-C to copy, Command-X to cut, Command-V to paste, or Command-A to select all.

4. Move Text On Android Phones And Tablets

  1. 1.Tap in a text field.
  2. 2.Highlight the text.
  3. 3.Tap Copy.
  4. 4.Tap where the text should go.
  5. 5.Paste from the menu or from your keyboard clipboard.

Android copy and paste depends on the keyboard and device, but the basic tap flow stays familiar.

With Gboard, copy text, open an app where you can type, tap a text area, tap Clipboard at the top of the keyboard, then tap an item to paste it. To keep a clip, touch and hold it, then tap Pin.

With Microsoft SwiftKey, tap in a text field, highlight the text, then select Copy. To create a saved clip manually, open Toolbar, tap Clipboard, tap the pencil icon, tap +, enter the clip under Clip content, then tap Save.

5. Get The Chromebook Shortcuts Right

Chromebooks follow the Windows-style shortcut pattern, with one extra shortcut for plain text.

  • Ctrl+C copies.
  • Ctrl+X cuts.
  • Ctrl+V pastes.
  • Ctrl+Shift+V pastes as plain text.

For clipboard history, press Search+V or Launcher+V. The clipboard menu stores up to five copied items. Use Tab or the arrow keys to choose an item, then press Enter.

If you use the on-screen keyboard, go to Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and text input > On-screen keyboard. Open the keyboard, place the cursor where the item should go, select Clipboard, then tap the saved item.

6. Paste Cleanly In Browsers And Office

Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, and Microsoft 365 apps use the same system shortcuts for regular copying and pasting: on Windows, Linux, and ChromeOS, use Ctrl+C, Ctrl+X, and Ctrl+V; on Mac, use Command-C, Command-X, and Command-V.

For a web address, click the address bar first. You can also press Ctrl+L in Chrome or Edge, or Command-L in Safari or Chrome on Mac, then copy the address with the normal copy shortcut.

For plain text, Firefox supports Ctrl+Shift+V on Windows and Linux, and Command+Shift+V on macOS. In Microsoft Edge, copy a URL, then press Ctrl+Shift+V in an app, or right-click in Edge, choose Paste as, then choose Plain text. In Word for Windows, Ctrl+Shift+V is documented as Paste text only.

In Microsoft 365 desktop apps, you can also select content and use Home > Cut, Home > Copy, or Home > Paste. In Word, open the Office Clipboard pane from Home by clicking the launcher in the lower-right corner of the Clipboard group.

7. Send Copied Content Between Devices

  • Apple Universal Clipboard lets you copy on one supported Mac, iPhone, iPad, or Apple Vision Pro and paste on another supported nearby device that meets Apple's Universal Clipboard system requirements. Put the devices near each other, sign in with the same Apple Account, turn on Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Handoff, then copy and paste normally.
  • On compatible Samsung Galaxy phones and tablets, open Settings > Connected devices and turn on Continue apps on other devices on both devices. Both devices need the same Samsung account, the same Wi-Fi network, Bluetooth, and One UI 3.1 or later; then copy text, images, or links on one device and paste on the other.
  • On select Android devices running Android 13 and above, Quick Share can send copied content. After copying, tap the confirmation at the bottom, tap Devices, then choose the target device.

Chrome handles page sharing differently. To send a page to another signed-in device, open Chrome, go to the page, select More > Cast, save, and share > Send to your devices, then choose a device. You can also right-click the page and choose Send to your devices.

8. Control Copy And Paste With Voice Or Screen Readers

Voice and screen reader controls use their own command paths.

  • Windows voice access supports direct copy and paste commands. Turn on voice access, select text, then say Copy that, Cut that, or Paste that. Microsoft lists voice access for Windows 11 version 22H2 and later.
  • With Windows Narrator running, press Narrator key+Ctrl+X to copy the last phrase Narrator spoke. Paste it with Ctrl+V.
  • On iPhone with VoiceOver, set the rotor to Edit, select text, swipe up or down to choose Cut, Copy, or Paste, then double-tap.
  • For Apple Voice Control, set it up on iPhone or iPad from Settings > Accessibility > Voice Control > Set up Voice Control. On Mac, go to Apple menu > System Settings > Accessibility > Voice Control > Commands.
  • On Chromebook, voice typing supports clipboard commands after spoken text clears from the box. Say Copy to copy selected text or Paste to paste from the clipboard.

9. Handle Places Where Pasting Is Blocked

If copy and paste fails on a work computer, school computer, remote desktop, or managed browser, the shortcut is not the problem. Admin settings can restrict Chrome clipboard permissions, Chrome shared clipboard features, or clipboard redirection in Windows remote sessions.

Ubuntu Terminal also uses a different shortcut pair: highlight text, right-click and choose Copy, or press Shift+Ctrl+C. To paste in Terminal, right-click and choose Paste, or press Shift+Ctrl+V. Regular Ctrl+C sends an interrupt to terminal programs.

In Ubuntu Files, select a file or folder and press Ctrl+C, then open the destination folder and press Ctrl+V. To move it instead, press Ctrl+X before pasting.
