When your Honor Magic 7 Pro's volume buttons stop responding, it can throw you off. You press them and nothing happens, leaving you to fumble with on-screen controls. The good news is that most of the time, this is a temporary glitch you can fix yourself without a trip to the service center.
I'd start with the simplest solutions first. They often do the trick.
Remove Your Phone Case
Take your phone out of its case. Sometimes, a case that's slightly misaligned or has worn padding can press against the buttons, preventing them from clicking properly. This is especially true for thicker protective cases.
With the case off, test the buttons again. You might find they work perfectly fine.
Perform a Force Restart
A quick force restart can clear out any minor software bugs that might be causing the buttons to freeze. This is a safe first step that won't delete any of your data or settings.
For the Honor Magic 7 Pro, press and hold the Power button for about 10 seconds. Keep holding it until you see the Honor logo appear on the screen, then release. The phone will boot up normally. Once it's back on, check if the volume buttons are responding.
Clean the Volume Buttons
Dust and pocket lint are common culprits. The slim design of the Magic 7 Pro means even a tiny bit of grit can get lodged around the button mechanism.
Gently blow compressed air around the edges of the volume rocker. You can also use a dry, soft-bristled brush like a clean makeup brush. Avoid using liquids directly on the phone. If the buttons feel sticky, a cotton swip dipped in a tiny amount of isopropyl alcohol (90% or higher) can help, but be very careful not to let any liquid seep inside.
Check Your Sound Settings
It's worth a quick look in your settings to make sure nothing is configured to override the physical buttons. Open the Settings app and go to Sound & vibration.
Scroll through the options here. Make sure your media volume isn't set to zero. Also, if you use the "Do Not Disturb" mode frequently, check its settings to ensure it's not muting media sounds entirely.
Test the Buttons in Different Apps
Open a few different applications to see if the problem is universal or app-specific. Play a video on YouTube, start a song in your music app, or try to adjust the ringtone volume from the main settings.
If the buttons work in one app but not another, the issue is likely with that specific app. Try force-stopping the problematic app from your phone's settings or checking for an update in the Play Store.
Use the On-Screen Volume Slider
While you're figuring this out, you can still control your volume. Just press the physical volume button once. This should bring up the on-screen volume slider on the side of the display.
You can then drag this slider up or down with your finger. You can also access a volume panel by pulling down the notification shade and tapping the tile with the volume icon.
Toggle Silent Mode
The Magic 7 Pro doesn't have a physical silent switch, but you can quickly toggle silent mode from the quick settings panel. Swipe down from the top of your screen twice to open the full quick settings menu.
Look for the tile labeled "Silent" or one with a bell icon with a line through it. Tap it to enable silent mode, then tap it again to disable it. Sometimes this simple software toggle can help reset the audio system and get the buttons working again.
Update Your Software
A bug in MagicOS or Android could be interfering with the button inputs. Honor regularly releases updates that fix these kinds of issues. Connect to a Wi-Fi network and go to Settings > System & updates > Software update.
Tap "Check for updates." If an update is available, download and install it. Your phone will restart during this process. After the update, test your volume buttons to see if the problem is resolved.
Check for Accessibility Features
Some accessibility settings can change how the physical buttons behave. Go to Settings > Accessibility. Look through the menu for any features like "Volume key shortcut" or "Power button ends call."
Make sure none of these are configured in a way that would disable the normal volume function. If you find a relevant setting, toggle it off and test your buttons again.
Boot Into Safe Mode
If the issue started after installing a new app, that app could be causing a conflict. Booting into Safe Mode temporarily disables all third-party apps, letting you see if one of them is the problem.
To enter Safe Mode on the Magic 7 Pro, press and hold the power button until the power off menu appears. Then, press and hold the "Power off" option on your screen. A prompt will ask if you want to reboot to Safe Mode. Tap "OK."
Once in Safe Mode, which will be indicated in the bottom corner of the screen, test your volume buttons. If they work perfectly here, a recently installed app is likely the culprit. You'll need to restart normally and uninstall apps one by one to find the offender.
