When your Google TV Streamer is playing video but you're getting no sound, it's usually a quick setting or connection issue. The problem could be with the Streamer itself, your TV's audio output, or an external sound system. Let's get your audio back.
Check Your TV and Sound System Volume
First, grab your TV remote and press volume up. Make sure the TV isn't muted. If you're using a soundbar or AV receiver, check its volume separately. I'd also press the volume buttons on the Google TV remote to ensure it's controlling the right device.
Restart the Google TV Streamer
This is the most reliable fix for random glitches. Unplug the power cable from the back of the Streamer dongle itself, not just from the wall outlet. Wait for about 30 seconds, then plug it back in. Wait for it to boot up and check for sound.
Verify the Audio Output on Your TV
The Streamer sends audio to your TV, which then plays it through its speakers or passes it to a soundbar. On your TV, go into the sound or audio settings. Make sure the output is set correctly, like TV Speakers or Internal Speakers if you aren't using external audio.
Inspect Your HDMI Connection
A loose HDMI cable can cause audio to drop. Unplug the HDMI cable from both the Streamer and your TV's port, then firmly reconnect it. Try using a different HDMI port on your TV, as some ports have special functions like ARC that can affect audio.
Check HDMI ARC or eARC Settings
If your soundbar is connected to your TV via HDMI ARC, ensure the Streamer is plugged into a different HDMI port. The soundbar must be connected to the TV's specific ARC-labeled port. Then, go into your TV's sound settings and enable HDMI-CEC (often called Simplink, Bravia Sync, or Anynet+). This lets the devices talk properly for audio.
Change the Digital Audio Format
Some TVs and sound systems struggle with certain audio formats from streaming apps. In your TV's audio settings, find the digital output format option. Try changing it from Auto or Bitstream to PCM. PCM is a simpler, universal format that almost always produces sound.
Test a Different App or Content
Open a different streaming app, like YouTube, to see if the problem is app-specific. If one app has no sound but others work, try force-closing the problematic app. Go to the Streamer's Settings > Apps, select the app, and choose Force stop. Then reopen it.
Adjust the Google TV Streamer's Audio Settings
On the Streamer itself, navigate to Settings > Display & Sound > Audio. Look for settings like "Surround sound" or "Manual audio selection." Try turning off surround sound or switching the format to see if it resolves a compatibility hiccup with your TV.
Update the Streamer's Software
Outdated software can have audio bugs. Go to the Streamer's Settings > System > About > System update and check for updates. If an update is available, install it. This has fixed audio issues for many users after a new app or system update.
Try the TV's Internal Speakers
To isolate the issue, temporarily disconnect any soundbar or receiver. In your TV's audio settings, switch the output back to the internal TV speakers. If you get sound this way, the issue is with the external audio setup or the connection between your TV and that system, not the Google TV Streamer.
