Start With a Force Restart

You press the power button on your Pixel 10a and nothing happens. The screen stays black, and it feels like the phone is completely dead. Before you start panicking about a bricked device, there are a few straightforward things you can try.

A lot of the time, the phone isn't truly dead. The system has just frozen up so hard that it ignores the power button. On the Pixel 10a, the force restart is your best first move.

Press and hold the Power button for 30 seconds, or press and hold Power + Volume Down for 10-15 seconds until the device restarts. This mimics pulling the battery on an old phone and forces the hardware to reboot from scratch. It fixes a surprising number of black screen issues.

Check if the Battery Is Completely Flat

If the force restart didn't work, the battery might be completely drained. Plug your Pixel 10a into a wall charger and leave it alone for at least 30 minutes.

The Pixel 10a supports 45W wired charging via USB-C PPS, which is very fast. But if you are using a slow third-party charger, it might take a while before the phone has enough juice to turn on. One issue specific to this model is overheating. If the phone got too hot, it might have shut down charging to protect the battery. Let it cool down in a shady spot for a while, then try plugging it in again.

The Charging Port Is a Common Culprit

A clogged charging port is a very common reason the Pixel 10a won't charge. Pocket lint and dust can get compacted inside the USB-C port, preventing the cable from making a solid connection. Grab a wooden toothpick or some compressed air and gently clean out the port. Don't use a metal pin or a paperclip, as you can easily damage the pins inside.

If that doesn't help, try a different USB-C cable. The Pixel 10a is picky about non-compliant cables, which can cause intermittent charging or no charging at all. You also have a backup option here. The Pixel 10a supports Qi wireless charging at up to 10W. If the port is acting up, just drop it on a wireless charger to get enough power to boot up.

Boot Into Safe Mode

If the phone turns on but gets stuck on the Google logo or crashes during startup, an app could be to blame. Safe Mode temporarily disables all third-party apps so you can test the core system.

Press and hold the Power button to turn the phone on. When the Google logo appears, press and hold the Volume Down key until the phone finishes booting. You should see Safe Mode at the bottom of the screen. If the phone works fine here, you know an app is the problem. Restart the phone normally and uninstall any apps you installed just before the issue started.

Clear the System Cache

Over time, temporary system files can get corrupted. This can prevent the operating system from loading correctly. Start by turning the phone off completely. Then, press and hold the Power and Volume Down buttons together to boot into Recovery Mode.

Use the volume buttons to scroll down to Wipe cache partition and press the Power button to select it. This won't delete your personal data. Once it's done, select Reboot system now.

Factory Reset as a Last Resort

If you are still stuck, a factory reset is the final software step. This erases everything on the phone, returning it to a clean out-of-the-box state. Get back into Recovery Mode by holding Power + Volume Down. This time, select Factory reset (or Wipe data/factory reset). Confirm your choice.

After the reset, select Reboot system now. The phone will restart and walk you through the initial setup. As long as your photos and contacts were backed up to Google, you can restore them easily.

What if the Screen Itself Is Dead?

Sometimes the phone is actually on and working, but the screen just isn't displaying anything. This can happen after a drop. Try connecting the Pixel 10a to a computer via USB. If your computer detects it or makes a sound when you plug it in, the phone is alive, but the screen or display cable might be damaged.

Similarly, set a timer or ask Google Assistant to do something. If it answers but the screen stays black, the display likely needs a repair.
