A black screen on your Google Pixel 10 Pro XL can make it feel like the phone is completely dead. But the phone might still be on the display could be frozen from a crash, or maybe the screen hardware gave out. Let's run through what usually works to get it back.
Force Restart the Pixel 10 Pro XL
This is the fastest fix and it works more often than you'd think. Press and hold the Volume up and Power buttons simultaneously for 10 seconds, then release when the device restarts. Keep holding even if the screen stays black for a few seconds the Google logo should pop up. This works even when the phone feels totally unresponsive.
Charge It with the Right Setup
A dead battery is a common cause. Plug your Pixel into a charger using the original cable and a 30W+ USB-C PPS charger for the fastest wired charging. Give it at least 15 20 minutes. If nothing happens, try a different cable and charger. Some Pixel 10 Pro XL units have a defective charging port, so if the phone doesn't show a charging indicator, try wireless charging instead. Remove the phone case first it helps with heat dissipation, and the 10 Pro XL tends to overheat and shut off while charging if it's covered.
Check for Physical Damage
Look closely at the screen for cracks, dark spots, or signs of impact. If your phone vibrates when you get notifications, plays sounds, or responds to Google Assistant ("Hey Google, what's up?"), the phone is working but the display hardware might be damaged. That means you need a screen repair from a UBreakIFix or authorized service center.
Boot into Safe Mode
Sometimes a third-party app causes a system crash that blacks out the screen. To rule that out, press and hold the Power button, then tap and hold Power off until the safe mode prompt appears. Tap OK to restart into safe mode. If the screen works in safe mode, you've got a troublemaking app. Uninstall any recently installed apps and restart normally.
Check Screen Brightness
Believe it or not, a black screen can just be the brightness turned all the way down. Swipe down twice from the top of the screen to open Quick Settings, then drag the brightness slider up. If you can't see the slider, ask Google Assistant to "turn up the brightness" just press the Power button or say "Hey Google" if it's enabled.
Try Wireless Charging
If your wired charging port is defective or damaged, wireless charging can still power up the phone. Place the Pixel 10 Pro XL on a Qi2 wireless charger, making sure it's centered perfectly. This phone has a finicky alignment even a few millimeters off can prevent charging. Leave it on the pad for 15 20 minutes, then try a force restart.
Use Google's supported recovery path
Skip the old recovery-cache wipe step on Pixel. If the phone can boot, restart it, check Settings > System > Software update, check Storage, and use Safe mode to test whether a downloaded app is causing the problem.
If the phone still will not boot, stays on the logo, or keeps restarting, Google's documented button-based recovery path is a factory reset from Fastboot/Recovery. That erases the phone, so use it only as a last resort after non-destructive steps and backups have been considered.
Factory Reset via Recovery
If nothing else works, a factory reset often fixes software-level black screens. First, back up everything you can a reset wipes all data. Boot into recovery mode as described above, then select Factory reset > Reset the device. The phone will erase everything and reinstall Android. After it restarts, check if the screen comes back.
Check for Water or Heat Damage
The Pixel 10 Pro XL can overheat and shut down it's a known issue. If your phone was charging and got hot, then the screen went black, let it cool down completely before trying anything. If it was exposed to water, power it off immediately and let it dry for 24 48 hours in a warm, dry place (not in rice dust damages ports). Moisture in the display connector can cause a black screen. If it doesn't come back after drying, the damage might be permanent.
