You told your Google Nest Mini (2nd Gen) to start your morning routine, lights on, news brief, coffee maker, and nothing happened. The Routine is active in the Google Home app, but the Mini just sits there silent. No response, no error. This is a common frustration, and it usually comes down to one of a handful of causes.
The fastest fix that works for most cases: open the Google Home app, tap Automations, find the broken Routine, tap to edit, then tap Save without changing anything. This forces a re-sync to Google's cloud and often wakes up the trigger.
Check Which Device the Routine Runs On
Routines in the Google Home app can be assigned to a specific speaker or to "any device" that hears the trigger. If your Routine is set to run on your phone instead of the Nest Mini, voice commands won't fire it because your phone isn't listening in the same way. Open the Routine, scroll to the bottom under Where to run, and make sure your Nest Mini is selected. If it shows "This phone" or another speaker, change it to your Nest Mini and save.
Verify Voice Match Is Enabled
The Nest Mini uses Voice Match to recognize up to six household members. If you recently added a new voice profile or cleared the existing one, the Mini might not recognize your voice and silently refuse to run personal Routines. Open the Google Home app, tap your profile picture, tap Assistant settings > Voice Match, and confirm your voice is enrolled. If not, run the enrollment again. After that, say the Routine trigger phrase and see if it fires.
Make Sure the Nest Mini Is Connected to Wi-Fi
An offline Nest Mini can't run cloud-driven Routines. The Mini uses both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, but if your router recently changed the network name or password, the Mini may be stuck on an old SSID. In the Google Home app, tap Favorites, tap your Nest Mini, then tap Settings > Device information and check the Wi-Fi status. If it shows disconnected, run through the setup again by tapping the device and choosing Forget, then set it up fresh in the app.
Test the Smart Devices the Routine Controls
If your Routine tries to dim lights or lock a door, but that device is offline or unresponsive, the Routine will complete silently without the action. Open the Google Home app, tap the specific light or plug, and try to control it directly. If it doesn't respond, re-pair it: remove the device from the Home app, then add it back through Add device. Once the device responds to direct commands, the Routine will control it again.
Re-Save the Routine to Force a Cloud Sync
Open the Routine in the Google Home app, tap the three dots in the top right, tap Edit, then tap Save without making any changes. This pushes the Routine definition back through Google's cloud to your Nest Mini. Wait about a minute, then test the voice trigger again.
Update Location for Sunrise and Sunset Triggers
Sunrise and sunset triggers depend on your home address being accurate in the Google Home app. If you recently moved or the address is wrong, these triggers can fire at the wrong time or not at all. Tap Settings > Home information and verify your home address. If it's outdated, update it. The triggers will recalculate automatically.
Disable Conflicting Routines
If you have multiple Routines with similar triggers (like "Good morning" and "Morning routine"), they can conflict. The Nest Mini might run one and silently skip the other. Review your Routines list in the Google Home app and look for overlapping triggers. Turn off any duplicates by toggling the switch next to them. Keep only the one you want active.
Update the Google Home App and Firmware
Both the Nest Mini firmware and the Google Home app need to be current. Firmware updates install automatically overnight when the Mini is idle, but you can force one by rebooting the Mini and leaving it connected. For the app, check your phone's app store for any pending updates. After updating, re-test the Routine.
If your Nest Mini is still on the legacy Google Assistant instead of Gemini for Home (the new AI assistant rolling out in 16+ countries as of early 2026), some Routines may behave differently. You can check which assistant is active by asking "What assistant am I using?" If it's the legacy one, you can switch in the Google Home app under Settings > Digital wellbeing > Assistant.
Factory Reset the Nest Mini
If Routines keep failing across multiple types, a full reset often clears the underlying issue. Flip the mic switch on the back to the off position, the lights turn orange. Then press and hold the center top of the device for about 15 seconds until you hear a reset tone. The Mini will reboot into setup mode. Set it up again in the Google Home app. This wipes all local data, including paired Bluetooth devices and custom volume settings, but your Routines saved at the account level will re-sync once the Mini is back online.
