Distorted, muffled, or thin sound from Galaxy Buds 3 almost always comes from the app settings or a codec mismatch, not a hardware defect. The open-fit buds rely heavily on positioning and software, so a few quick adjustments usually clean things right up.

Open the Galaxy Wearable app, tap Equalizer, and make sure it's not stuck on a custom preset. Tap Normal to return to neutral, then play a song you know well. If the muffled quality clears, that was it. The touch controls on the stems can accidentally switch EQ presets when you adjust the fit, so this is a good first check even if you never touched the app.

Adjust the Fit for Better Sound

Galaxy Buds 3 are open-fit, they sit in your ear without sealing the canal. That means the angle and position of the stem change how the driver projects sound into your ear. If they're rotated even slightly, the high end can sound rolled off or muddy.

Put them in so the stem points slightly forward, toward the corner of your mouth, not straight down. You'll feel a subtle change in how the mids and highs hit. If your ears are on the smaller side (a known fit issue for this model), try twisting the bud slightly until the soundstage opens up. There's no tip to swap, so position is everything.

Check the Bluetooth Codec on Android

The Galaxy Buds 3 support Samsung Seamless Codec, AAC, and SBC. If your Android phone is on SBC for some reason, music will sound compressed and airless. Go to Settings > About phone > Software information, tap Build number seven times to enable Developer Options, then head to Developer Options > Bluetooth Audio Codec. Make sure it's set to Samsung Seamless Codec (or Use system selection). On non-Samsung Android phones, you may need the Galaxy Buds Manager app to access full codec selection.

On iPhone, AAC is automatic and usually fine. But check that your music source isn't set to a low streaming quality, free Spotify tiers or low-quality AAC on Apple Music can make any earbud sound muffled.

Disconnect From Other Devices

Galaxy Buds 3 can pair to multiple Samsung devices simultaneously, and battery drain with multi-device use is a known issue. But there's also an audio problem: when they're juggling two connections, the sound can glitch or lose bandwidth. Open Galaxy Wearable, tap Bluetooth connections or Auto switch to other devices, and turn off the feature for any device you're not currently listening to. You might hear the improvement right away.

Update the Firmware

Samsung pushes firmware updates that improve sound processing and Bluetooth stability. In the Galaxy Wearable app, tap Earbuds settings > About earbuds > Update earbuds software. If there's an update available, install it with the earbuds in the case and the case plugged in. The update takes a few minutes. Missing a firmware update is one of the most common reasons for persistent audio issues.

Reset the Earbuds Through the App

If sound problems survived EQ, fit, and codec checks, a full reset clears any corrupted audio processing state. Open Galaxy Wearable, tap About earbuds, then tap Reset. The earbuds will power down and forget all paired devices. After they restart, pair them again and test with a clean session. You'll need to redo your EQ and any other custom settings, so jot those down if you had a favorite preset.

Test a Different Music App

Sometimes the app is the issue. Spotify, YouTube Music, and Apple Music all handle Bluetooth differently, and each has had bugs with specific earbuds. Play the same track in two apps. If one sounds fine and the other doesn't, force-quit the bad one and reopen it, or reinstall it. App-side problems don't need any hardware fix.

Turn Off Read Notifications Aloud

Galaxy Buds 3 can read incoming notifications through the earbuds, but when that feature is on, the buds sometimes downgrade to a voice-friendly audio mode that cuts bass and clarity. Open Galaxy Wearable, tap Notifications, and toggle Read notifications aloud off. If the muffled sound clears up, leave it off or only enable it for specific apps. It's a small toggle that can make a big difference in how music comes through.
