When your Fairphone 5 volume buttons stop responding, it can be a real nuisance. You press them but get no feedback, no change in sound, nothing. The good news is that most of the time, this is a software hiccup or a simple physical obstruction that you can fix yourself without any special tools.
Before you think about sending it in, try these practical solutions. They cover the most common reasons why those buttons might go silent on your modular phone.
Remove Your Phone Case
Start with the absolute simplest check. Take your Fairphone 5 out of its case. Sometimes, especially with thicker cases designed for the phone's slightly bulkier, modular frame, the case can press against the buttons or misalign just enough to block their travel.
A worn-out case might also have material that's sagged into the button cutouts. Give the buttons a press with the case off to see if they click properly.
Perform a Force Restart
A force restart is often the fastest way to clear a temporary software glitch that's causing the buttons to freeze. This won't delete any of your apps or data.
For the Fairphone 5, you have two main options. The first is to simply press and hold the Power button for 10 seconds or more until you see the screen go black and the phone vibrate or show the Fairphone logo as it reboots.
The second, more thorough method leverages its modular design. You can power the phone off completely, then use the included tool to pop off the back cover and remove the battery for about 30 seconds. Reinsert the battery, put the cover back on, and power it up. This cuts all power to the components.
Check Your Sound Settings
It's worth a quick look in your settings to make sure nothing got switched off by accident. Head into Settings > Sound & vibration.
Scroll down and ensure the option for "Use volume keys for media" or similar is toggled on. Some Android skins have settings that can disable the physical buttons for media volume, defaulting them to only control ringtone volume instead.
Clean the Volume Buttons
Dust and pocket lint are common culprits, especially around the buttons. The Fairphone 5's design might allow a bit more debris in around its user-replaceable parts over time.
You can try gently blowing compressed air around the edges of the volume rocker. For any sticky residue, a cotton swab dipped in a tiny amount of isopropyl alcohol (90% or higher) can help. Be very gentle and don't force liquid into the phone.
Test the Buttons in Different Apps
Open a few different applications to see if the problem is universal. Try playing a video on YouTube, some music in Spotify, or a podcast.
If the volume buttons work in one app but not another, the issue is likely with that specific app's permissions or a bug. Check the app's settings or try updating it from the Google Play Store.
Use the On-Screen Volume Slider
While you're figuring this out, remember you can always adjust volume from the screen. Just press any volume button once to bring up the on-screen slider, then drag it with your finger.
You can also pull down the quick settings shade and adjust the slider from there. This is a good temporary workaround.
Toggle Silent/Vibrate Mode
A quick trick that can sometimes jog the system back to normal is to toggle your sound profile. Pull down your notification shade and tap the bell icon to switch between Sound, Vibrate, and Silent modes a couple of times.
After cycling through them, test the physical volume buttons again. This resets the audio routing in a simple way.
Update Your Software
Since Fairphone promises those long 8+ years of software updates, it's crucial to stay current. A bug in your current version of Android 14 (or whatever version you're on) could be affecting the button drivers.
Go to Settings > System > System update and check for any available updates. Make sure you're connected to Wi-Fi and have good battery life before installing.
Check for App Interference (Safe Mode)
If a recently installed app is causing a conflict, booting into Safe Mode can tell you. This temporarily disables all third-party apps.
To enter Safe Mode on the Fairphone 5, press and hold the Power button until the power off menu appears. Then, press and hold the "Power off" text on the screen until it asks if you want to reboot to Safe Mode. Tap OK.
If the volume buttons work perfectly in Safe Mode, a downloaded app is the culprit. You'll need to uninstall recent apps one by one to find the offender.
Consider a Factory Reset
If all else fails and the buttons work in Safe Mode, a deeper software issue might require a reset. This is a last resort because it will erase all data on your phone.
Back up everything important first. You can initiate a reset by going to Settings > System > Reset options > Erase all data (factory reset). Follow the prompts, and the phone will restart as if it were new.
If the buttons still don't work after a factory reset, the issue is almost certainly hardware-related. Given the Fairphone 5's modular design, a hardware fix might be more straightforward than on a sealed phone. The entire button module or a connecting ribbon cable could be loose or damaged.
