If your Fairphone 5's fingerprint scanner has suddenly stopped recognizing you, it can lock you out of your own device. This is a common hiccup, but it's usually something you can fix yourself without needing any special tools. Let's get it working again.

Clean the Sensor and Your Finger

This is the absolute first thing to try. The Fairphone 5's fingerprint reader is built into the side power button, so it needs a clean, dry surface to read your print clearly. Gently wipe the power button with a soft, dry microfiber cloth.

Also, check your own finger. Moisture, lotion, grease, or even minor cuts can throw off the scan. I'd give your finger a quick wash and dry it thoroughly before trying again. It's a simple step, but it fixes the issue more often than you'd think.

Restart Your Fairphone 5

A quick reboot clears out temporary software glitches that can confuse the sensor. Just press and hold the power button until you see the power menu, then tap "Restart."

If the screen is unresponsive, you can force a restart. Press and hold the power button for about 10 seconds until the device vibrates and the screen goes black, then release it. The phone should boot up normally after a moment.

Re-register Your Fingerprint

Sometimes the stored fingerprint data gets corrupted. The fix is to delete the old print and add it again. Head to Settings > Security & privacy > Device unlock > Fingerprint.

You'll need to enter your PIN, pattern, or password. Tap on the fingerprint that's giving you trouble and select "Remove." Now, tap "Add fingerprint" and follow the prompts, making sure to roll your finger to capture the edges as the animation instructs.

Check for Android Updates

Fairphone is committed to long-term support, and software updates frequently include fixes for hardware bugs like sensor issues. Go to Settings > System > System update and tap "Check for update."

If an update is available, install it. These updates are a big reason to choose a Fairphone, as they keep everything running smoothly for years. After updating, give the fingerprint scanner another try.

Inspect Your Screen Protector

The Fairphone 5's fingerprint reader is in the side power button, not under the screen, so a screen protector will not interfere with fingerprint unlock. If unlocking keeps failing, instead check for anything covering the power button, such as a bulky case or debris lodged around the button, and clean or clear it.

Try removing the protector temporarily to see if the scanner starts working. If it does, you'll need to look for a protector marketed as compatible with in-display fingerprint sensors. While you're at it, re-register your prints after removing or changing the protector.

Clear the System Cache Partition

This clears temporary system files that can sometimes cause problems, without touching your personal data. First, power your Fairphone 5 off completely.

Now, press and hold the Volume Up button and the Power

Use the volume buttons to navigate to "Wipe cache partition" and press the power button to select it. Confirm, then select "Reboot system now."

Check for App Conflicts in Safe Mode

A recently installed app could be causing a conflict. Booting into Safe Mode temporarily disables all third-party apps. Press and hold the power button, then in the power menu, tap and hold the "Power off" option until you see a prompt to reboot to Safe Mode.

If the fingerprint scanner works perfectly in Safe Mode, you know a downloaded app is the problem. Restart normally to exit Safe Mode, then try uninstalling apps one by one, starting with the most recent, to find the offender.

Review Your Security Settings

There are a couple of settings that can affect the scanner. First, go to Settings > Security & privacy > Device unlock and make sure "Fingerprint" is toggled on. It seems obvious, but it's worth a check.

Also, look for a setting called "Screen protector mode" or "Increase touch sensitivity." This setting improves touchscreen responsiveness through a protector, but note it does not affect the Fairphone 5's power-button fingerprint reader. You'll usually find it in Settings > Display.

Add Multiple Fingerprints

Register the same finger twice. It sounds odd, but it gives the system more data to work with and can improve accuracy. Go through the enrollment process for your primary finger a second time, perhaps at a slightly different angle.

Also, register another finger entirely, like your other thumb or index finger. This gives you a reliable backup if one finger is ever dirty, wet, or has a small cut that confuses the sensor.

Ensure Your Fingerprint Isn't "Locked Out"

After too many failed attempts, Android can temporarily disable fingerprint unlock as a security measure, requiring your primary PIN or password. This is normal.

If you've been struggling with the scanner, just use your backup PIN or pattern to unlock the phone. Once you're in, the fingerprint option should automatically re-enable itself and you can try again.

If you've worked through all these steps and the sensor is still completely dead, it's possible there's a hardware fault. Given the Fairphone 5's modular design, a repair might be more straightforward than on other phones. You can reach out to Fairphone's support community or their official service channels for guidance on next steps.
