A black screen on your Fairphone 5 is a jarring experience, but it's often a temporary software hiccup rather than a permanent hardware failure. The phone might be on and running with just the display frozen, or a deeper crash could have locked everything up. Let's get it working again.
Perform a Force Restart
This is almost always the first step. Press and hold the Power button for at least 10 seconds. Keep holding it even if the screen stays dark. You should eventually feel a vibration or see the Fairphone logo appear. This forces a reboot and can clear out many software glitches that cause a black screen.
If the standard force restart doesn't work, you have a unique advantage with the Fairphone 5. You can physically remove the back cover, take out the battery for about 30 seconds, and then reinsert it. This is a guaranteed hardware-level power cycle that can resolve issues a button press can't.
Charge Your Phone Properly
A completely flat battery will show nothing. Plug your Fairphone 5 into a charger using a known-good USB-C cable and a power adapter. For the fastest possible charge, use a 30W USB-PD (Power Delivery) charger. Wait at least 20-30 minutes before trying to turn it on.
If you see no charging indicator light or screen response after half an hour, try a different cable and wall adapter. The modular design means the USB-C port module could potentially be loose, but that's a less common cause than a faulty cable or drained battery.
Check the Display for Damage
Inspect the screen closely under good light. Look for any new cracks, deep scratches, or discolored spots. If the phone still vibrates for notifications, makes sounds, or responds to "Hey Google" commands, then the device is on but the display hardware is likely damaged.
One of the benefits of the Fairphone is repairability. A damaged screen is a straightforward, user-performed replacement. You can order a new display module directly from Fairphone and follow their online guides to install it yourself, which is far cheaper than a traditional phone repair.
Adjust the Screen Brightness
It sounds simple, but if the auto-brightness sensor malfunctions or the setting gets turned all the way down, the screen can appear completely black. Try asking Google Assistant to "turn up the brightness" by saying "Hey Google" or holding the power button.
Alternatively, if you can vaguely see shapes on the screen in a dark room, you might be able to blindly swipe down from the top to open the Quick Settings panel and drag the brightness slider upward. This is a known quirk that can happen after certain Android updates.
Connect to a Computer for Recovery
If the phone is stuck in a boot loop or a serious software crash, you can use a computer to reflash the software. Connect your Fairphone 5 to a Windows PC or Mac using a USB-C cable. You'll need to have the Android SDK's Platform-Tools installed, which includes the ADB and Fastboot utilities.
If the phone is recognized in ADB, you can try issuing a reboot command. If it's only recognized in Fastboot mode (you might see a small text menu on a dark screen), you can use Fastboot commands to reflash the current stock firmware without erasing your data, which is similar to an "Update" on other phones.
Boot into Safe Mode
A misbehaving third-party app can sometimes cause the system UI to crash, resulting in a black screen. To boot into Safe Mode, which disables all downloaded apps, first turn the phone off. Then, press and hold the Power button until you see the Fairphone logo.
As soon as the logo appears, immediately press and hold the Volume Down button. Keep holding it until the animation finishes and you see "Safe Mode" in the bottom corner. If the screen works in Safe Mode, you know a recently installed app is the culprit. You can then uninstall apps one by one from Safe Mode to find the offender.
Consider a Factory Reset
This is a last-resort software fix that will erase all your data. You can attempt this if the phone is still partially responsive. If you can blindly navigate, go to Settings > System > Reset options > Erase all data (factory reset).
If the screen is completely black, you can sometimes trigger a factory reset through the hardware buttons. Turn the phone off, then press and hold the Power button and Volume Down button together to enter recovery mode. Use the volume keys to navigate to "Wipe data/factory reset" and select it with the power button. I'd only recommend this if you have a recent backup.
Inspect Internal Connections
The modular design means internal connectors can, in rare cases, become slightly dislodged. If you're comfortable, you can remove the back cover and the battery. Gently press down on all the visible modular connectors, like the one for the display and the main board, to ensure they are fully seated.
This isn't a common issue, but it's a unique troubleshooting step for the Fairphone 5 that you can't do with most other phones. It's worth checking if you've recently dropped the phone or performed a module swap, as the impact could have loosened a connection.
Evaluate for Water Exposure
While the Fairphone 5 has some water resistance, it's not immune to liquid damage. If the phone was recently exposed to moisture, it could cause a short in the display connector. Power it off immediately and let it dry thoroughly in a warm, dry place for at least 48 hours.
Don't use rice or a hair dryer, as debris or heat can cause further damage. After it's completely dry, try turning it on again. If the screen remains black, liquid may have corroded a component, and you may need to replace the affected module, which is still more straightforward than repairing a sealed phone.
