Your Epson EcoTank ET-4850 prints just fine, but the scanner stopped working. You hit Scan to Computer and nothing happens. Or the scan runs but the file never reaches your Mac or PC. The ET-4850 is a 2021 all-in-one with an ADF, Ethernet, and 2.4 GHz only Wi-Fi. Scanning issues on this model usually trace back to one of three things: the Epson helper app isn't running, the network connection is shaky, or the ADF roller needs cleaning.

The quickest thing to check is whether Epson ScanSmart is actually running on your computer. This is the current scanning app for the ET-4850, and without it active, the printer's Scan to Computer button has nowhere to send the file. Open Epson ScanSmart from your Start Menu (Windows) or Applications folder (Mac). If it opens, walk to the printer, tap Scan > Scan to Computer, and your computer should show up in the list.

If that didn't work, work through the rest of these fixes.

Why the Scanner Stopped on the ET-4850

This printer supports several scan destinations: Scan to Computer (over USB or network), Scan to Email (via SMTP), Scan to Cloud (via Epson Connect), and Scan to Folder (network share). Each has its own failure points. The most common culprits on the ET-4850 include Epson ScanSmart not running, outdated drivers after a Windows or macOS update, and network credentials that silently expired. The 2.4 GHz only Wi-Fi on this model can also cause large scans to time out if the network is crowded.

Make Sure Epson ScanSmart Is Allowed Through the Firewall

Epson's own documentation flags this as a top cause: the scanning service traffic gets blocked by Windows Defender or third-party security software, and the printer has no way to tell you. On Windows, open Windows Security > Firewall and network protection > Allow an app through firewall. Find Epson ScanSmart and Epson Event Manager in the list. Make sure both have the Private and Public boxes checked. If they aren't listed, click Allow another app and browse to C:\Program Files\Epson Software to add them.

If you use Norton, McAfee, or another security suite, repeat the allowlist step inside that software. Restart your computer and try scanning again.

Reset the Scanner Registration in the Epson Scan 2 Utility

If ScanSmart still can't find the printer, run the lower-level reset built into the driver. Open Epson Scan 2 Utility on your computer (it installs alongside the ET-4850 driver). Click the Other tab, then click Reset. This clears the saved scanner registration and forces a fresh rediscovery of the printer on the network. Click OK and try a test scan from ScanSmart.

Wake Your Computer Up First

Scan to Computer pushes the file from the printer to a host that needs to be awake to receive it. If your laptop is in sleep mode, the scan job just hangs. Wiggle the mouse or press a key to wake the computer fully, confirm ScanSmart is running, then press scan on the printer's touchscreen.

Switch to Ethernet for Large Scans

The ET-4850 has an Ethernet port, and large scan files transfer much more reliably over a wired connection than over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. Run a Cat 5e or better cable from the printer to your router. The printer picks up an Ethernet IP within about 30 seconds. Re-add the scanner on your computer using that Ethernet IP, and scans should complete without timeouts.

Update the Driver After an OS Update

If your computer recently updated to macOS 26 or Windows 11 24H2, an older ET-4850 driver can break scanning entirely. Download the latest driver from the Epson support page. Uninstall the old driver first (Windows: Control Panel > Programs; Mac: drag from Applications to Trash, then run the Epson uninstaller). Install the fresh driver and re-add the printer. Updated drivers fix most post-OS-update scanning bugs.

Restore Default Settings on the Printer

If the printer can't be found on the network at all, and printing might also be affected, reset the printer's network settings. On the touchscreen, tap Setup > Restore Default Settings > All Settings. Confirm the reset. This wipes the Wi-Fi configuration and restores factory network defaults. You'll need to reconnect the printer using the Epson Smart Panel app on your phone.

The full restore is the nuclear option, but it reliably shakes loose whatever is stuck in the printer's internal network config.

Clean the ADF Pickup Roller for Jam-Prone Scanning

The ET-4850's auto-document feeder is known to jam with thin paper. If the ADF keeps grabbing two sheets at once or jamming up, the rubber pickup roller is likely dirty. Lift the ADF cover (the flap on top of the printer). Locate the rubber pickup roller and wipe it with a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water. Let it dry for a minute before closing the cover. This clears paper dust and residue that cause multi-feeds.

Reinstall the Scanner on Your Computer

If everything else works but the computer just won't see the scanner, remove and re-add it. On Windows, open Settings > Bluetooth and devices > Printers and scanners, click the ET-4850, and choose Remove. Then add it back with the Add Device button. On Mac, open System Settings > Printers and Scanners, select the ET-4850, hit the minus button to remove, then click the plus button to re-add. The fresh add usually clears the stale scanner registration that was blocking discovery.
