The Echo Show 8 stops responding to "Alexa" or goes dark in the Alexa app, and you're staring at a screen that won't do anything. The fix is usually fast once you know what's really going on.

Start with the quickest one: pull the power cable from the back of the device, hold off for a full 30 seconds, then plug it back in. The screen goes black, boots up, and within about a minute the clock and widgets should reappear. Try saying "Alexa, what's the time" right after boot. That single restart clears a surprising number of hangs.

If the screen came back but Alexa still won't listen, here's the rest of the checklist.

Check the Microphone and Camera Shutter

The Show 8 has two privacy controls you might have forgotten about. On top, there's a microphone mute button, when it's pressed, a red indicator appears on the screen and the mics are dead. Tap it once to unmute.

There's also a physical camera shutter slider on top of the device. If the camera shutter is closed, the Show 8 won't use the camera for video calls or Drop In, but Alexa voice should still work unless the mic is also muted. Still, slide it open in case a routine or skill is waiting for camera access and getting stuck.

Why the Show 8 Stops Listening

Several things cause the screen to freeze or ignore the wake word. The microphone gets muted accidentally. Wi-Fi drops because the router pushed a firmware update overnight. A skill hangs while trying to process a command. Or the device itself is stuck mid-update on Amazon's latest firmware.

On the Show 8 specifically, if you've been using it in a humid environment, bathroom after a shower, near a kitchen steam vent, the touchscreen can register ghost touches that lock the UI. That makes it look unresponsive even though the mics are fine.

See What the Alexa App Says

Open the Alexa app on your phone and tap Devices, then tap your Echo Show 8. If it shows "Offline," the Wi-Fi connection dropped. If it shows "Online" but the screen on the Show 8 is dark or stuck, the device has network but the software is frozen. Either way, the next two fixes usually cover it.

Reconnect to Wi-Fi

In the Alexa app, tap the Show 8, then Settings > Wireless > Change. Pick your 5 GHz network if available, it's the most stable for streaming video and voice commands. The Show 8 supports both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, so don't worry about 6 GHz bands (this model doesn't use them). Once reconnected, test voice again.

Force a Firmware Check

Amazon pushes firmware updates to Echo devices silently when they're idle. Leave your Show 8 plugged in and untouched for 30 minutes. During that time it checks for new firmware in the background. After 30 minutes, unplug it, wait 30 seconds, and plug it back in. The update installs during boot. If the device becomes unresponsive again immediately after booting, you may have a firmware bug that a factory reset will fix.

Disable a Misbehaving Skill

If Alexa responds to some commands but not others, a third-party skill is likely hanging. Go to More > Skills and Games > Your Skills in the Alexa app. Look for any skill enabled recently or that you use for smart home control. Disable it, then test the wake word. If the Show 8 snaps back to life, that skill was the problem.

Clean the Screen and Reduce Humidity

Ghost touches from moisture or grime can make the Show 8 seem broken. Wipe the screen with a dry microfiber cloth. If the device is in a humid spot, move it to a drier location for a few hours. The touchscreen should behave normally after that. You can also turn off Adaptive Brightness in Settings > Device Options if the display keeps dimming or brightening erratically.

Restart Streaming Apps

If the Show 8 responds to voice but streaming apps like Netflix or Amazon Music fail to load, they may have crashed after a long sleep. Say "Alexa, go home" to return to the main screen, then open the app manually. If it doesn't load, a soft restart (unplug, 30 seconds, plug back in) clears the app cache.

Factory Reset via Settings

If none of the above works, a factory reset is the nuclear option. On the Show 8, go to Settings > Device Options > Reset to Factory Defaults. Confirm the reset. The screen goes dark, then reboots into setup mode. You'll need to go through the Alexa app setup again, and this wipes all skills, routines, paired devices, and personal settings. But it also clears any software corruption that was blocking the wake word.

Reboot Your Wi-Fi Router

If other smart home devices are also acting up, the router is the common link. Unplug it for 60 seconds, plug it back in, and wait three minutes for everything to reconnect. The Show 8 should come back online on its own.
