You open the Alexa app expecting to control your Echo Show 8 (3rd Gen) and nothing happens, the device shows offline, commands fail, or the live view from the camera won't load. This usually comes down to a hiccup between the app and the device, not a broken Echo.

Start with the quickest fix. Force-close the Alexa app and reopen it. On iPhone, swipe up from the bottom and flick the Alexa app card up. On Android, tap the recent-apps button and swipe Alexa away. Reopen the app and give it 15 seconds to reconnect to your Echo. A huge percentage of “device not responding” issues clear at this step alone.

Restart the Echo Show 8 (Don’t Just Unplug)

Unplug the power adapter from the back of the Echo Show 8 or from the wall. Wait 30 seconds, this drains any residual charge in the capacitors. Plug it back in and wait for the screen to boot up fully. You’ll see the blue light ring spin, then settle. Open the Alexa app and check if the device is back online. A full power cycle fixes more transient network and software glitches than any other step.

Check Your Wi-Fi Band and Signal

The Echo Show 8 (3rd Gen) supports both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi, but if your router uses a single SSID with band steering, the Echo can sometimes latch onto the wrong band or fail to reassociate after a router reboot. Open the Alexa app, tap Devices, select your Echo Show, and scroll down to Device Status. If it shows no Wi-Fi connection, try moving the Echo closer to your router temporarily.

If the Echo keeps dropping off your network, log into your router and create a separate 2.4 GHz SSID (e.g., YourNetwork-2.4). Connect the Echo to that network by going to Settings > Network on the device screen. Once connected, the Echo will hold that band steadily.

Sign Out of the Alexa App and Back In

Sometimes your Alexa session expires silently in the background. Tap the More tab in the bottom bar, then Settings and scroll all the way down to Sign Out. Confirm, then log back in with your Amazon credentials. This refreshes the connection between the app and the cloud, clearing any stale tokens that were blocking commands to the Echo Show.

Update the Alexa App and Echo Show Firmware

An outdated app can lose compatibility with the device. Head to the App Store (iOS 13+) or Google Play (Android 9+) and search for Alexa. If an update is available, install it. While you’re at it, make sure the Echo Show itself is running the latest firmware. On the device, swipe down from the top and tap Settings > Device Options > Check for Software Updates. If an update is found, let it install, the Echo restarts automatically afterward.

Make Sure the Camera Shutter Is Open

This is a common oversight with the Echo Show 8. There’s a physical camera shutter slider on the top edge of the device. If it’s slid closed, the built-in 13MP camera with auto-framing won’t work, and the Alexa app may show a camera error even though everything else responds fine. Slide the shutter to the open position (you’ll see the lens). The app should pick up the camera stream within a couple of seconds.

Check Local Network Permission on Your Phone

On iOS, the Alexa app needs the Local Network permission to discover and communicate with your Echo directly over Wi-Fi. Open Settings > Alexa on your iPhone and make sure Local Network is toggled ON. Without it, the app can only talk to the Echo through the cloud, which can introduce delays or failures. The same applies to Android’s Nearby Devices permission, check your phone’s app permissions under Settings > Apps > Alexa.

Wait Out Streaming App Issues After Sleep

A known issue with the Echo Show 8 (3rd Gen) is that streaming apps like Netflix or Prime Video sometimes fail to load after the device has been in sleep mode for a long time. The screen may stay black or show a frozen splash screen. If this happens, just press the power button on top to put the display to sleep, wait 10 seconds, and press it again to wake it up. The streaming app should reload normally. This isn’t a permanent fix, but it works every time.

Factory Reset the Echo Show 8 (Last Resort)

If nothing else has worked and the Alexa app still can’t talk to the device, a factory reset will clear all settings and re-establish a clean connection. On the Echo Show screen, go to Settings > Device Options > Reset to Factory Defaults. Confirm the reset. The Echo will reboot and go through the initial setup wizard. Open the Alexa app and follow the on-screen prompts to register the device again. This wipes all your custom settings, routines, and Wi-Fi credentials, but it almost always resolves persistent app-to-device communication failures.
