When your Dell XPS 13 camera shows a black screen, isn't detected by apps, or gives an error, it disrupts video calls, meetings, and recordings. Here's how to fix it.
Check the Physical Camera Shutter
Your XPS 13 has a built-in privacy shutter that physically slides over the camera lens. Look for the small, thin slider right above the screen, directly next to the camera itself. Make sure it's pushed all the way to the side to fully uncover the lens.
Restart Your XPS 13
A simple restart can clear out any software processes that have locked the camera. If another app was using the camera when you tried to open a second one, only a restart will release that lock. Close all your video apps and restart the laptop.
Close Other Apps Using the Camera
Only one application can use the camera at a time. If your web browser is using it for a website, Zoom or Teams won't be able to access it. Check your system tray and Task Manager for any video apps running in the background, close them all, and then open only the app you need.
Check Camera Privacy Settings in Windows
Windows has a system-wide privacy toggle for the camera. Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Camera. Make sure Camera access
Update Your Camera Drivers
Open Device Manager, expand the Cameras or Imaging devices category. Right-click on the "Integrated Webcam" or similar entry and select Update driver. Choose "Search automatically for drivers." For a more thorough check, I'd run Dell SupportAssist, as it automatically finds and installs the correct drivers for your specific XPS 13 model.
Test with the Windows Camera App
Open the built-in Camera app from your Start menu. If the camera works perfectly here but fails in another app like Zoom, the problem is with that app's settings, not your hardware. Go into the problematic app's video settings and make sure it's set to use the correct camera.
Reinstall the Camera Driver
In Device Manager, right-click your camera under Cameras and select Uninstall device. Check the box that says "Delete the driver software for this device" if it appears. After uninstalling, restart your XPS 13. Windows will automatically reinstall a fresh copy of the camera driver upon startup.
Check for Windows Updates
Go to Settings > Windows Update and click "Check for updates." Install any pending feature or quality updates, as they often include compatibility fixes for hardware like cameras. Also, click Advanced options > Optional updates to see if there are any driver updates listed specifically for your camera.
Reset the Camera App
If the built-in Camera app is malfunctioning, you can reset it. Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find and click on Camera, select the three-dot menu, and choose Advanced options. Click the Reset button. This clears the app's cache and settings without affecting your other applications.
